Varesco WW2 and back

My mother born in 1942 as Mirella Varesco. My mother was given for adoption some time after she was born. She was born in what is now referred to as Pula, Croatia (County of Istria now). Her mother, Fiorina Varesco, was part of the partisan guerilla (anti-facist movement) during WW2. I believe Fiorina, according to my mother, moved at some point to Trieste. My mother was adopted in 1951 by my grandfather Antonion Colangelo. My mother was on the USS McCrae from Bremerhaven Germany. My mother actually met Fiorina, her biological mother when I was a kid. Sadly, it did not go well as her mother, we soon realized, was an alcoholic. My father being italian from Italy, had little patience for this, and got her a bus ticket to Canada where my mother/Fiorina has other relatives for sure. My mother didnt learn much and I think maybe deep down, this was very painful for my mom-having been abandoned and left at orphanages until the age of 9-she didnt ask much. I have a very difficult task of trying to piece together my mothers genealogy. My mother is still alive and I just wonder if she still has relatives in either Pula or Trieste. Maybe a brother or sister. This is quite overwhelming in trying to get anything beyond my mothers manifest from germany. Pula has changed statehood a few times. Where or how do I really begin this journey? Any help would be grateful.
