Isabel in Ohio

Surnames: Isabel
My father Charles Richard of Painesville, OH moved to Columbus, OH. His fathers' name was Albert whose father was Stephen Jessie Isabel. Stephens' father was Constant Isabel who also lived in Columbus, OH till his death but was reported to be from French Canada (Trois-Rivieres?). He was a brick maker/brick layer by trade and was born in 1840 and died in 1896. Some tell me they think that the name "Isabel" is not French at all but was Portuguese who moved to French Canada and learned the language fast. Any information would be appreciated! Thanks!

I saw your query about Constant Isabel. I'm working on a history of old St. Peter's Parish on the north side of Columbus and trying to find a little more about why so many French Canadians came to that area as brick makers. Have you ever come across any information along that line? Or have you determined where he lived in Canada? I haven't yet looked for the Isabel family in the church records, but I know they are buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
