I'm researching these Iricks for a good friend of mine. I'm having a problem finding Jefferson in the 1870 census. He would have been around 7 years old. He is living with his brother Lee in the household of P.M. Hughes as laborers in Union, Orangeburg Co., SC. He is living with his wife Wilhelmina in the 1900 census in Union, Orangeburg Co., SC. My problem is - there is no Union, Orangeburg Co., SC in the 1870 census to search page by page if need be.
I have searched high and low for Orangeburg County towns and places where Union would have been, to no avail. I know that part of Orangeburg County became Lexington County in 1870 (tentative during the time of the 1870 census), but since he was living in Orangeburg County in 1880, it would stand to reason that Union was not incorporated into Lexington County. Aiken County took over part of Orangeburg County in 1871, but that was a year after the 1870 census was taken.
As you all know, the spelling of the Irick surname has given way to many different interpretations by census takers, so that's one consideration. If you've been researching genealogy as long as I have, you know that not everyone was counted in every census. Some families maybe missed a time or two. However, the 1870 census is crucial in that it would reveal who Jefferson Davis Irick's parents were.
If someone has stumbled upon that information, I certainly would appreciate your sharing. In the meantime, I'll keep searching!
Thanks!
