Samuel Ellis Iredell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
I am looking for information on the Iredell line from Philadelphia. My great great great grandfather was Samuel Ellis Iredell. He was born in 1810 in Philadelphia, and was married to Marinetta Lavalade Suffrain in 1835. They later moved to Wayne County, Indiana. We believe that his father’s name was Jonathan Iredell who married Hannah Ellis. These families were Quakers or Friends that came from England and settled in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Would appreciate help on verifying who his parents mights have been and where they came from.

Re: Samuel Ellis Iredell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
My great grandather was John W. Koogle, who married Virginia Iredell, a daughter of Samuel Ellis Iredell and Marinetta Lavalade Souffrain. I am a rank beginner in genealogy and would be most interested in learning more about the Iredells and, particularly, John W. Koogle and his parents. I do have some info on Marinetta's siblings and parents that I would be happy to share.Hope this reaches you after all this time!

Re: Samuel Ellis Iredell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
I am still here after all this time and grateful that you replied to my message. My 2nd great grandfather was John Suffrain Iredell, sister to your Virginia. Samuel Ellis Iredell and Marinetta, his wife, came from Philadelphia as a young man and settled in Wayne County, Indiana. You probably already know this, as well that they were Quakers. Samuel’s parents were Jonathan Iredell and Hannah Ellis. I have yet to discover much about Jonathan and Hannah, although I have just completed some research about Samuel’s children and their families. I would be happy to send it to you. Can you receive in Adobe Acrobat or .pdf format?
I also have a family group record of John W. Koogle and his family based on the 1880 and 1900 federal censuses, Earlham Cemetery records, and the Indiana death and marriage records index. Perhaps you have more about John Koogle’s particular family than I have.
Also, I know very little about Marinetta’s family, other than that her father was from France and her mother from Germany. I would love to hear what you have on them as well. I look forward to hearing from you again.

Re: Samuel Ellis Iredell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
I came upon this obituary, I am not related John Soufrrain: his obituary. Died-at his residence in thie city on the 13th inst., after a lingering illness, John Souffrain, in the 80th year of his age. The deceased was born in France. When he was 11 years old he enlisted in the French service and was taken on board a man-of-war where he remained two and a half when he returned to his parents. He was at home a short time when he was again pressed and sent to sea. He was then in war 11 years; he was blockaded at the island of Malta two years and a half where he suffered a great deal and was several times upon the point of starvation and would of been glad any time to have given a dollar a pound for horseflesh could he have procured its price. He endeavored to make his escape from there at night in company with several others; they were pursued by Lord Nelson. They were prisoners but a short time when they were exchanged for some of Nelson's men. He fought at the battle of Nile and was there made prisoner by the English; he made his escape from there to save his life. He was shot at and the ball whizzed by his head and dropped into the water; he swam two and a half miles with his bundle on his back and was picked up by the French vessel in 1802. He was taken (sic) with yellow fever and was left at St. Domingo and after he recovered he came to Philidephia with the intention of returning to France. He became acquainted, liked the place, and concluded to remain a while. In 1804 he married and resided there until 1836 when he emigrated to the West with his family and settled in Richmond, and has resided here until his death. Source: The Palladium, Thursday, January 24, 1856 page 3 Published in Richmond, Wayne county, Indiana a will is found in Wayn county, Indiana in Book 3, page 379. Did not mention his wife Elinor, but mentioned his son Isaac B. Souffrain and two umarried daughters: Ellen and Catherine. It named his married daughters: Mary Newman, Margaret Olds, and Marinetti Iredell. Source: National Genealogical Society Quarterly March 1968 Vol, 56, Number 1
I thought this might be of interest to someone in this line.

Re: Samuel Ellis Iredell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Hello! My fourth great grandfather was Jacque Souffrain. His United States naturalization record shows that he entered this country as Jacque Souffrain, but after took the name of John Souffrain. Some family members later spelled it Suffrain. Jacque Souffrain was born abt 1776 in Bourdeaux, France. He entered the French military at the age of 14, and served for many years in the French navy during Napolean's time. At one point, he was captured by the British, escaped, and was picked up by a French vessel in 1802. He was put off at St. Domingo after becoming ill with yellow fever. He recovered at St. Domingo, and entered America at Philadelphia abt 1803. He decided to remain in America after marrying in 1804, and never returned to France as intended. His daughter, Marinetta Lavalade Suffrain, was born in 1812 and is my 3rd great grandmother. I do not know enough about the history in that part of the world. I do know that Souffrain is an unusual name and difficult to find anything about it in my genealogy searches. I have seen postings on the LDS sites of wills and marriages of some Souffrains that came from St. Thomas. What do you think? Is it possible that having spent some time at St. Domingo, that my Jacque Souffrain might be related to the Souffrains in your part of the world? Thank you for your reply to my message. I look forward to talking to you.
