I am african american and I just joined this thread and I would like to share what I know. My great great grandfather was James Irby(b 1837) and Agnes(b 1836 maiden name unknown). Their son Henry Irby(b 1871) married Henrietta (b 1876). My grandfather, their son was Heflin Irby (b 1895) and married Lucille (b 1905) maiden name Gault. From what I can tell my great great grandfather was born in Virginia but came to Mississippi where his children were born. He and his wife had four children Eddie, Jakob, Mary, and Henry( my greatgrandfather). My greatgrandfather married Henrietta (maiden name unknown) and they had 5 children, Maud, R B, Henry, Heflin, and Lelia. My grandfather was Heflin and he was married to Lucille(Gault). They had 7 children. William H, Edward H, Earlene, Ruth, Hattie, Henrietta, and Mattie. My father and his family were born in Como, Mississippi (Panola County). They all migrated to Gary, Indiana in the mid 1930 or 1940 ?

Is there a chance that in any of your research you've come across a "Jack", "Sam" or "SJ" Irby? This was the father of my great grandmother. He was not present in her life, so our family knows nothing about him. He went by Jack, but a few censuses I've found from 1930 and 1940 show him listed as Sam J and SJ. He was born in Choctaw County, AL on May 17 1885, but the census lists that his parents were born in MS.

Hello Stoliver146: If your E.W. Irby is an African American and was from the Como/Sardis/Batesville, MS area I can put you in touch with your cousins. My Irby ancestors are also from this area. I was born in MS in one of the towns and grew up in Batesville. Most of the Irbys I know who are related to E.W. Irby remain or have close ties to those who remain in Batesville which is where they bought land after leaving Sardis and Como. My ancestors were Robert Irby and Jennie Wills Irby who were brought from Nottoway County, VA by slaveholders Freeman and his brother J.W. Irby. Anyone who wants to contact me to get more info my contact me at b.j.caldwell38@gmail.com.

Hello Irbyty: I am familiar with all the Irbys in the Sardis/Como/Batesville, MS area. I grew up in Batesville. My 2nd great grandmother was Jennie Wills Irby and her husband was Robert Irby who was dead by the 1870 census. I found info about him on the death certificate of two of the younger daughters of Jennie. Rose Irby was my great grandmother on my father's side. One of my good friends who has been doing genealogy much longer than I have is also from the Irby line and also grew up in Batesville, MS. The slaveholders who brought our ancestors from Nottoway County, VA to the Como/Sardis area were Freeman Irby and his brother J.W. Irby. My good friend also gave me the death certificate of one your ancestors sons, Ed Irby son of James Irby. This certificate indicates the maiden name of your 2nd great grandmother, Agnes, was Anderson. If you would like to find out more about the Irbys please contact me at b.j.caldwell38@gmail.com. I am also on Facebook as Bettye J. Caldwell from Chicago, IL originally from Batesville, MS.
