My grandfather was Ralph Jodice...born in or around naples in the late 1890s, moved to NY/NJ area in early 1900s. having seen some original paperwork from his side of the family, it is apparent that the original spelling was Iodice, but, as suggested in another message, the spelling was changed. In this instance, the change appeared to occur upon immigration.

My Grandfather's name was Angelo Iodice also spelled "Iudice", "Yodice", "Guidice". I have also know two brothers who spelled the name "Eodice". They lived in New Jersey. My family originated in Sanza, Province of Salerno near Naples. Hope this info helps you. Good Luck!

My grandparents were distant cousins and each held the name "Iodice" They were born in 1884 and 1892, respectively, in and around Caserta. Our name was changed to "Yodice" How, it seems, will always remain a mystery. I expect it was some agent at Ellis Island. They settled in Brooklyn, though Grandma's two sisters settled and were married in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Hi!

I was just curious, seems you have quite a similar story to mine. I am 3rd generation born in the US. My great-grandparents last name was originally spelled Iodice as well and they settled in Brooklyn/Bronx and I am desperately trying to find out a longer lineage going back to Italy to try and find more relatives of mine. I do not know my great grandparent's names, just my grandfather's and his wife. Please contact me and maybe we may have some similar information to share. Thanks!

Hey, Angela--

Don't know that there is much more for me to say. I understand that the surname, "Iodice," derives from Giudice, which means judge. Interestingly enough, I understand it is found as far north as Venice and was a common surname for Italian Jews.

We are not sure how the name was changed, but my paternal grandparents were married in the Macerata Campania section of Caserta, about 25 miles northeast of Naples. It is a very beautiful there, as you might imagine. Best I can surmise, my grandparents emigrated here around 1914. My grandmother, Giovanna, died in 1941 and my grandfather died in December 1955.

We have no relatives in the Bronx, but my Iodice grandparents were third cousins and my grandmother had two sisters who arrived here before she did. They settled in Bridgeport CT and were married there. Grandpa Yodice had relatives in Bergen County NJ.

Sure hope that sheds some light on this for you. There is a very nice gentleman here who wrote to me and seemed to know a great deal about our surname. If I find his name, I will post it here.

Thanks for writing, Angela and good luck! :-)

Hello
My grandfather was Ralph Jodice (born ca. 1898, died ca. 1968). My family lived in Bergen County NJ for many years (until the late 1980s). On some old italian documents it appears that our name was spelled with the first letter as an "I". In fact, the Ellis Island records I found had ourname spelled with an "I" also. My grandfater came over from Naples in 1908 on the ship San Giorgio. Ralph was married to Veronica Santino who came over from Sicily. The Santino's had many family members in the Bergen Co. area as well in Brooklyn and Stante Island.
