My grandfather 's name was Gaetano Iodice who came from Naples to U.s. in 1903. My father 's name was Natale Leon Jodice who was born in N.J. in 1905 or 6. I am trying to learn why the difference. Thank you

My grandmother's last name was Iodice and she married my grandfather whose last name was Jodice. Some family members tell me they were cousins. Both were born in 1904. They had 5 children (3 girls and 2 boys). Both the boys were born deaf. My father being one of them. I'm just trying to figure out the story behind it as well.

Since the letters I and J are used interchangeably in Italy, the names Iodice and Jodice are essentially the same. Iodice is the dominant and root name. Those called Jodice were probably originally Iodices who were given the name Jodice by some civil or church officials.
I have been researching the Iodice family for many years. I even recovered a genealogy of the family in the national libarary in Naples. The history of the family name goes something like this. The first Iodices came from Rome, but were shipwrecked in Amalfi in the early middle ages. There they founded the cities of Amalfi, Ravello, and Scala. They became merchants and soon expanded all over Italy, especially within the Kingdom of Naples. Their largest concentration is in Naples, Bari, and Caserta.
The name Iodice means Judge. It has been modifed to fit local naming practices, often appearing as the tuscanized "del Giudice" or the apulian Lo Iodice.
My branch of the Iodices come from area around Capua within the province of Caserta.

I have been searching & found very little re my grandfather Gaetano.I have a Gaetano that came fromMarcanese in 1903, single on the ship Victoria from Naples. The other Gaetano came over on the Calabria from Marano in 1905 and listed as married.. My father was born in either N.J. or N.Y l905 or 1906. I know nothing about his mother except the name Concetta Reitano was on my fathers marriage certificate, although he never knew her. I was very interested in the info you have uncovered. Thank you Phyllis

To Phyllis Jodice Forant,
I do not have the answer for the letter change "i" to "j," however my family tree has some similarities to yours.
My Great-Great-Grandfather's name was Gaetano Iodice. His wife's name was Rose Fornicola. My Great-Grandfather's name was Gennaro Jodice (or Iodice) and his wife was Olympia Cosenza.
Olympia came from Napoli to the United States in July, 1904. I believe that Gennaro came the over in 1903.
My question is: Could my Great-Grandfather be the brother of your Grandfather?

The only information I have is that my grandfather,Gaetano listed his father(my great great grandfather) on one document as Natale and his wife as Teresa Charese. On my grandfathers death certificate his father is named Gaetano and the ame name for his wife. Thank you for your reply

One of that sons Alfredo born 1911 at Sessa Aurunca-Caserta, married with Maria Salipante and living in Gaeta - Latina (formerly province of Casreta)is my father. All my ancestors had been workers by railways Companies in the Campania region. Best regards

My branch of the Iodice family come from Marcianise. My great-great grandfather Gaetano Iodice emigrated in 1892 to New York City. He was married to a Posillipo who also had Santoro blood.
I have been to Caserta, and I am very curious as to why there are so very many Iodice's in this area. Portico di Caserta seems to have the highest concentration.

Thank you Robert for your answer. Do you know something more about your Gra Grandfather Gaetano (e.g. the father's or brother's name ) ? I know that many (over 200) Iodice or Iudice or Yodice, coming from Caserta around, are in the EllisIsland passenger lists. I love them, poor persons, getting away from theyr country to build a better son's future. Regards.
