Hi! I am trying to find information about Fred Enabnit's family. I was wondering about Fred's mother's name (Christopher Enabnit's wife). Any other family history beyond Chris and his wife would also be appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Ginger,

We have that your emigrant ancestor was Christ Inabnit Sr., who emigrated to America from Grindelwald area of Switzerland in 1863 with his wife (do not have name of his wife), & son Christ. Jr. & his wife Susanna Catharine Abegglen & their 2 children Catherine & Rosa. The settled in Napoleon, Holmes Co., OH, & from there moved to Polk Co near Crocker, IA, & later to Meservey, IA. ( It appears that Christ Inabnit, Sr.(with two dots over the a) used the Inabnit spelling, but Christ Jr. used the ENABNIT spelling after emigrating to America from Grindelwald, Switzerland. We have names of the following children of Christ Jr. & Susanna: Fred, Chris, Robert, William, David, Catherine, Minnie, Rosa, Louisa, Emma, Sophia & Caroline. Total of 13 children! We do not have info. on any of these, except for Fred & his wife, Katherine Altes, who had children, Arthur, Elgin, Edward, Carrol, Harold, Ivan & Olive (Enabnit) Welsh.

It has been reported to us that Susanna died in Meservey, IA. Jan., 1914. Christ Jr. died in Calif. Jan 23, 1932 and they both were buried in Meservey, IA.

Several of us have been researching our family history since the early 1960s and have accumulated a good bit of information, which you can find at

and

Ann Brown is our web mistress and she does a great job of keeping our web site updated, etc!

We are descendants of Hildebrand In Aebnit who was christened March 4, 1725 in Grindelwald,Interlaken Dist, Switzerland. His parents were Peter In Aebnit & Anna Braband/Brawand. We know that he had several siblings. In abt 1738-42, he emigrated to America & settled in Lancaster Co., PA. He m Anna Schlegel. We are descended from his son, Joseph. Our surname with all of it's many spelling variations is kind of rare in America, but in Switzerland, it is found often.

We have found several of our surname (or variations) who have emigrated from Grindelwald area of Switzerland. One of these was Hans Inabinet who also emigrated to SC 1735. He never arrived in SC (believed to have died at sea enroute) but his wife & sons did arrive in SC. There was a Peter Inabnit who arrived 23 Sep 1752 on the ship Ann Galley in Philadelphia. There was a Jacob Inabnit who arrived in San Francisco, CA 1851 & a Christian Inabnit came to Wisconsin 1866. Probably there are others whom we still have not found. Of course, we do not yet know how all of these are related to each other, but we do believe there is a connection!

We hope to hear more from you and hopefully, we can pool information and help each other.

My great grandfather was Elgin Enabnit. My grandfather is Teddy Enabnit. Elgin died in the mid 1990s. My grandfather has a lot of information that he has passed to our family. If you need more information, I will gladly give what I have!
