Gladys was a longtime member of Heffernan Institute #76, YLI (Young Ladies Institute). She was a block captain for Neighborhood Watch and successfully lobbied to have a streetlight installed on her block. She received a Best Neighbor Award from the Normal Heights Community Association. Gladys volunteered as a Pink Lady at Mercy Hospital and at the American Cancer Society. During her lifetime, she enjoyed travels to Spain, Hong Kong, Alaska, Canada, Hawaii and a Panama Canal cruise, and an avid San Diego Padres fan. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Casper, one of the owners of the former Valley Ho Restaurant in Mission Valley. Her husband died in 1981. Survivors include her daughter and best friend, Laura Jo Impastato; son, Guy, and daughter-in-law Helene of Santee; and three adored grandchildren: Marc, Teresa, and Paul. Her dear friend, Anna Mary Montgomery of Lakeside, also survives her. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, March 11 at 7 p.m. at St. Didacus Church, 4772 Felton Street.
