Hi,
Interesting read!
Matilda Imison entered our family when my great great grandfather John Perry (born Devizes 1821) left his wife and daughter(my great grandmother) and took himself to London. There he met Matilda where on the census record(1851) they are only a road apart .By 1861 census he is living with Louisa Elizabeth Maslen Perry (his real wife) their daughter Mary Sarah Sisssons Perry and his two daughters Emily and Alice. He is registered as the father on Emily's birth cert and Matilda as the mother.Over many years they stay together through various family traumas.Emily (confusingly now named Louisa) is living with my great grandparents (her half sister) in the 1901 census and her son Arthur is living up the road! Matilda disappeared so we have no idea what happened to her.Although we do know that she had called herself Perry on the birth cert of Emily but I can find no marriage anywhere.I do know that John Perry ended his days back in Devizes with his wife and daughter and sadly did not recognise the illegitimate girls in his will.
Matilda's children Emily(Louisa) and Alice would be my great aunts.
I am sad to see that you think Matilda ended up in the Kensington work house.
But believe that Louisa(Emily) died in Edmonton /Enfield (I need to check with another relative)
Emily/Louisa married a Mr Sampson in San Fransisco .She worked as a maid in her early days.It was here that a son Arthur Francis Sampson was born .He kept his American citizenship and returned to the USA in 1917 when America entered WW1.He left his wife Constance and baby daughter but did return when war ended.
I have only recently found Alice. She appears to have spent time in a home for unemployed women in London and then returned to Reading where her sister was living. She married Alfred J Bilson and lived round the corner from Emily/Louisa Sampson her sister who now was living with my great grandmother's illegitimate daughter.
I do hope my ramblings have been some help.
Is Matilda the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth because if so I have recently found all her brothers and sisters in a baptismal record.
