As an 'inquisitive' Imeson I am interested in tracing the Imeson family tree.
My great grandfather lived (and we believe was born circ 1870) in the Filey area of East Yorkshire, with relatives in Levverston and Gristhorpe close by. I now live in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire, but have relations across North and East Yorkshire.
Believe it or not, whilst on holiday in the USA we found a text which reads as follows:-
The English family name Imeson is classified as being of metronymic origin. In this instance the surname Imeson can be traced to the Middle English personal name Imma or Emma, a short form of the various Germanic personal names with the first element "irmin or ermen" meaning whole or entire, (apparently originally the name of a Germanic demigod). The most famous bearer of the name Imma in the Old English period was the wife of King Cnut. Thus the surnname signifies "the son of Imma or Emma". Variants of the surname Imeson are Imison, Imisson, Imms and Emmeson, which are all particularly associated, outside of London, with Yorkshire. One of the earliest references to this name can be found in the parish of Rowmer, Masham in Yorkshire, where it is documented that Christopher, the son of Matthew and Jane Imeson, was christened in June 1662. Later records include Edmund Barker, the son of Matthew and Isabella Imeson who was christened at Thirsk, North Yorkshire in September 1846, while Agnes the daughter of Joseph John and Mary Ann Imison, was christened at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London in April 1859.
Apparently our family crest is "A demi lion issuant gules" whatever that means.
Does anyone have any comprehensive info that they are willing to share to give me a head start on this for which I would be truly grateful.
Cheers
Stewart Imeson
