Next to nothing is known about William. He lived in Jackson County, Georgia, in the 1820's when some of his children were born. In 1840 a child was born in Clarke County. William was living at the time of the 1850 census apparently.
His wife was Nancy Wood, children Mary, Sarah, Alfred, William, Elizabeth, James, Jesse, Susan.
The family was unusual in that they were the first in my line in that area who were not farmers. They worked in factories in Athens, later moving east to work in cotton mills in Augusta and South Carolina.
This is not the same William who was in Bulloch County at the same time.

I agree with everything Doug said here except the 1850 census. Nancy Iler is listed alone on the 1840 census with the last child born that year. She is listed only with her kids and one slave. My guess is William died that year, but I can't find any documentation. Clarke County was heavily settled in 1827 based on a land lottery. No mention of Ilers are mentioned in the lottery, although two Woods families are mentioned. Nancy later lists her place of birth as Georgia. I can't find any documents that actually show Nancy Iler's maiden name is Wood. Any help here is appreciated.
