Classification: Query
Surnames: Ikola/Kaukonen
I have had trouble NOT locking up (computer freeze) in the Ancestry.com Census Imagery...so a dear Mona read the census for me.

I asked for John and Mary Kaukonen Ikola....near Eveleth/Cherry.....child, Anna being my Grandmother....and, Emil, first born was American born....and I didnt know that...she says:

There does not seem to be any Ikola's in Cherry in 1900.

1920's John and Mary Ikola lived in Cherry [township 57 range 19]
There were 8 children listed but Anna was not as she was married by then. The oldest son Aivid? was 26 at the time so Anna would fit in this family. John emigrated to the us in 1892 and Mary in 1892 or 3.
They are not listed in the Clinton township book .
The youngest was four[daughter] Hard to read.

John became a citizen in 1913 and was a farmer.

1910-
John Ekola 36 married Emig. 1891 farmer. (Ikola...mispelling?)
wife Mary-32- emig. 1893

Children:

Emil-13 Born Mass. worked on farm as laborer (I thought he was FinnBorn, he was life long Eveleth resident)
Anna 12 Born in New Hampshire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (my grandmother)
Julia-9 born in Montana (Aunty Jule)
.........(Jenny, was possibly born in Montana..died either in Mn or Mt.as toddler)
John E.? Jr.-7 born Mn (Uncle John all his life Eveleth)
Willis L.-4 Mn. (Uncle Bill, dont know much about him)
Mary E.? 3 Mn. (called Aunty Merie...hard to read Possible)
Walter W.-1 [so born 1909 in Mn] (Uncle Walter)

1920-

Arthur (Uncle Art)
Wino? M (Uncle Wayne)
Aina? L (Aunty Aini)
Aived? E (Uncle Arvid)

Uncle Donald born in 1920 didnt make the census.

Evidence has it....if you cant find your IKOLA....please look at all the name possibilities.....She found my GGrandfather under EKOLA.

Then, I just went and snooped around in Ellis Island ship manifests....looking to see if any Kaukonen's came...on my GGrandmother Mary's side......

I find this:

Evelina Kaukonen age 54 on the Cedric sailing from Liverpool, arriving Ellis Island, Oct 9 1904. She was accompanied by her child Matti age 11. It lists no husband. And it says not a widow.
She was coming to America to be with her Daughter Maria J. Ikola...(my ggrandmother Mary[americanized]) and her son in law...and a sister(?a new search..a sister?). They came from Hango Finland.

So....I have now found my GGGrandmother Evelina.....the only reason I clicked on this name was:....my Dad's sister has the middle name of Evelyn.....and this was sorta close....whats in a name?.....DISCOVERY...make sure you spell your names wrong, right, and upside down...and the most impossible idea could be the most plausible......I have learned all of my information from wonderful helpful folks....I have spent little money.....and I have stumbled onto some of the most interesting things, by making a mistake....and being so surprised.......

Now I need a census reading for Anna Elizabeth Ikola, after she was married...Eveleth area....household would be:
Anna Elizabeth Ikola and Matt E. Niemi, with two kids in 1920 Census. Kids Walter and Helen...ages 2 and 4.
The following year...1921 Matt E. Niemi was in a Mining accident....Eveleth Minn....he died 6 years later in Nopeming Sanitorium...Otter Tail. I havent a clue re: his background....:(

Hope this helps someone.....Priscilla
