Hello

After I posted that message I did end up finding that one baptism record. I also found an interesting record for 1904 where a Father and son both named Gábor Ihász were in a coal mining accident in Pennsylvania.

Thanks for the reply :)

Hi, Mark -- Glad you found Benjamin's baptismal record. Sometimes I've found that tracking down siblings can lead to more information [Did they emigrate at the same time? What was their destination? Can I find their death information?] I hope you can find all of your relatives.

Gábor Ihász and his son were my grandfather's uncle and cousin. At the time of the Harwick mine explosion in 1904, the younger Gábor was only 17. He was listed among the fatalities as "Hungarian miner boy". My grandfather was 11 at that time and was already working in the coal mines near Barton, Ohio. They certainly had a hard life in this new world!

Stay safe!

Wow.

So then if Beni is not your grandfathers cousin then his father Gabor would not be the same as I read about in the mine.

Makes it more interesting with multiple Gabor's

My grandfather, who was Beni's son, has been gone since 1984. He told me I was the last Ehasz boy :) My father hardly remembered anything about his grandfather. Even today some of the things I have been finding surprise him. I remember looking up Ehasz online 20 years ago and finding 50 or 60 of them, mostly Ohio.

My cousins paid a few hundred dollars for a family search about 25 years ago. They got this book all about Ehasz and Hungary but looking at that now I can see how off it is.

One thing I specifically remember if my grandfather talking about how the name was pronounced. He said it was not the same way it was spelled. I read now that Ihasz is pronounced eee haz. He was insistent it was an A sound and ended with house. We were supposed to say A-house. Which my mother refused she didn't want me to spell it wrong :)

One other thing my grandfather once told me we were descended from Hungarian royalty but got kicked out of the country and were forced to shorten our name. He joked that it was because the men could not stay away from Polish women.

Thanks for everything.
Mark

Since I wrote this post I was able to find some exact matches.
My great grand father Benö Ihász born in Nyárád, Veszprém, Hungary baptized 03 Apr 1881
His parents Gábor Ihász and Katalin Pordán had their first child Rozi Ihász in 1872 in Románd, Veszprém, Hungary
There is also Mári Ihász
There are two Imre Ihász listed 2 years apart. Is it possible one died and they renamed a second child the same name? Then there is their last child Sándor Ihász in 1887

So the most likely Great Great grandfather would be Gábor Ihász baptized 25 Sep 1848 to József Ihász and Rosalia Bálint.

This is fun but confusing.

Further searching the church baptism records show two Gabor

One of these two has to be my great Grandfathers father. It would be the one that did not die in the mining accident.

Gábor Ihász
25 szept. 1848 (25 Sep 1848) Vaszar, Veszprém, Hungary
József,
Rosalia

Gábor Ihász
