Hello,
My great Aunt Ella Icha was born in Hungary and died here in Ohio in 2004. She personally told me our last name is pronounced EEE - haa . However, that may simply be the way my great grandpa taught her how to say it. I truly doubt that was its original pronunciation.
The 'grown-ups' never spoke their native language around we children. Although, we sometimes heard them whispering in the kitchen or in the living room when we were in bed. My father and his cousins never were taught a single word by their parents. And we weren't allowed to ask any questions about Hungary or anything. No-one, absolutely no-one would give up any information. It was like it was a 'forbidden' subject.
Here is some more information I have to share:
My Great Grandfather’s sister; Veronika nee Icha Vitkovitz (Yes, her married last name is very similar to her mom’s maiden name!)
Petition for Naturalization: Born in Dulka, Poland
My great grandfather was born in a part of Poland as well; says his death certificate. But he was also raised in Humenne, Hungary.
All his other sister’s have census’ that state: Magyar-Hungarian
My Grandfather’s sister: Ella Shellko nee Icha
Petition for Naturalization: Born in Budapest, Hungary
Until I research churches and other places that is all I have.
Sincerely,
Theresa (Iha) Hurlburt
