Hi,
I am an Ierardi and my people settled in New York City. My family lost touch with my grandfathers half brother many years ago, and they could have moved to the Boston area as long ago as the 1960's. If you think we might have a connection and would like to explore it, write back to me.
As far as the name and the location in Italy... My people come from the Calabria region. A town called Catanzaro in the providence of Mezzarocco (not sure of that spelling). We always thought that the name was changed from Gerardi when my grandfather came through Ellis Island, but I once ran into someone who told me that Ierardi is very common in some areas of Italy. Of course I really have no way of confirming that, I mean there really doesn't seem to be too many of us around.
I have been told that my half GrandUncle changed his name to either Gerardi or Jerardi for business purposes (perhaps not legally though).
Well I hope the town information helps you in your research.
Be Well!

My grandfather came through Ellis Island around 1900-1905 and settled in West Newton, MA. His name was Frank Ierardi but was changed ay Ellis to Frank Yerardi. He married Teresa Tallarico who came over in 1913.

TO JOE IERARDI:
I am reading all of these entries and I'm seeing the same things we were told as my brothers/sisters and I were growing up. Our grandparents came from Calabria also. Petila Policastro was the name of the town, and I believe it was in Catanzaro ( a county I suppose). The original family name was Ierardi but was changed at Ellis Island to Yerardi. His name was Frank Yerardi and his brother's last name somehow got changed at the same time to Gerardi.

I had a grandmother, maiden name Maria Ierardi, who was born in Marchesoto, Cantazaro in Calabria in 1885. Moved to Philadelphia and married Domenick Rocco (Some say Rocca). Everyone in my family spells Ierardi differently (Irardi, Erardi, Ierardi, Gerardi, etc.).

I believe she had 2 sisters (Rose & Celia) and a brother Carmen.

Any relation?

Mr. A. Attilio, Thank you for you response. My grandfather's name was Joseph Ierardi and was born in Italy ( I do not know the town ). The date was 1880. I can see no connection because as I said before that the town would tell it all. I want to thank you again. Charles t. Erardi

My father's parents were from Callabria in Italy and spelled their name Ierardi but changed it to Erardi. My grandmother was from Potenza in Italy. They came thru Ellis Island to Connecticut, New Haven at first, then moved to Meriden and opened the first gas station there, later expanding to a Studebaker dealership. Other than that I don't have many other facts. Feel free to e-mail me.
