Hi Maria,

I thought I posted recently a reponse to you Chester Ieradis on this board, but I don't see it listed anywhere now.

I visited a family reunion of the Ieradi family in Chester, PA about 15 years ago. Your family was very friendly, and it's the first time I tasted pizzelle! (by the way, I need a new machine - do you know where I can order one from?)

I was about 23 years old, and came with my parents. Anyway, that's when someone told me that your ancestor Bruno Ieradi was actually born in Cortale, and not Maida as had been thought. Likewise, my great grandfather Giovanni Ieradi was born in the small village of Cortale, and not in Borgia as had been thought. For all we know they could have been first cousins - or even brothers.

Just last night, I found the website of another family that I'm descended from (i.e. the Garrigus/Garrigues/Garrigue, etc. family.) They have a DNA project going which has already proved in some cases that the variations in spelling are NOT always simply various branches of the same family with different spellings as had been assumed, but in some instances dennotes completely different origins.

Evidently, there's a company in Texas that exclusively does this type of testing, working only with genealogy groups. Only male volunteers who bear the family name are tested (since Y chromosomes are passed only from father to son in unbroken lines of descent.) For example, you yourself obviously wouldn't have a Y chromsome to pass on to your sons, and your male children would inherit their Y chromosomes only from THEIR father, and not from the Ieradi genetic line. Therefore, only your male Ieradi relatives would have an "Ieradi" Y chromosome representative of the family.

For something like only a $99 dollar fee (and let's be honest, most Italian-Americans pay more than that just to put on a good spread when guests come over), male volunteers can swab the inside of their mouth, send it through the mail, and a quick test on 12 different "genetic markers" is done. This test can determine whether or not different Ieradi/Ierardi/etc. groups are actually related to each other or not, and about how far back their common ancestor was. Each time another perfect family match is found, those registered receive an email letting them know another "cousin" has been found. These tests are actually VERY accurate.

I think this is really cool, and I'm planning on being gene-scanned myself. I think that all families with all the various spellings listed on this Ierardi board should each have at least one male volunteer DNA-searched (3 individuals a usually needed to firmly establish a family gene-type), and we could all actually figure out which of our families are actually related to each other, and by extention, where these family clusters actually originated. This would certainly be of invaluable help regarding any future family research back in Italy.

Having the family DNA searched and filed could possibly even be a gift grandparents could buy their newborn grandsons (sorry girls!) for their baby books (like foot and hand prints, bronzed baby shoes, lock of hair, etc.) Those who are interested, but are not a suitable candidate might even want to consider sponsoring a suitable male relative. I know I'm going to be DNA-scanned myself. I'm interested in seeing whom I'm linked to. Isn't that, afterall, the very essence of Genealogy?

If those interested email me, Maybe we can get something going and compiled like the Garrigus family has, and post the results here. I don't think this site has a problem with posting information about other sites, so I will go ahead and give the website address here: www.familytreedna.com

I hope to here from you all soon. D.Michael Iradi d.m.iradi@wanadoo.fr 1-973-887-0658
