Giovanni Antonio Ieradi b.c.1860 in Cortale (Calabria), Italy
I am searching for info. on Giovanni Antonio Ieradi of Cortale (later Borgia?), Italy, who died somewhere in S. America before 1896 (possibly in Buenos Aires.)
GIOVANNI ANTONIO IERADI, b.c.1860? in Cortale (Calabria), Italy d.? in Buenos Aires?, Argentina. He m.c.1878 Paola (b.1859 d.1944) dau. of Salvatore Stilo. He was born in Cortale per his Italian grandchildren. He was a mason by profession, and met her at the “Festival of St. Leonardo.” He left for S. America (because of lack of work) with his oldest son Tomaso (b.1883) probably sometime before the child was 10, and “disappeared” leaving Tomaso orphaned in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Paola evidently “remarried” (although a marriage certificate has as yet to be produced) sometime before 1896 Gaetano Mazzoccha, a coachman and “major domo?” of the local Count in Borgia, Italy.
I was told by Eleanor Iradi that her father told her (and strangely none of his other 7 children) the following story: “Giovanni and Tomaso arrived in Brazil, where Giovanni (accidentally?) killed a man. He and Tomaso fled to Buenos Aires, but the dead man’s family killed Giovanni there.” My father, Eleanor’s brother, thinks that Eleanor created this account because her own father-in-law in NJ had been imprisoned for intentionally killing a man, and the story was invented to lessen the social shame of her and her husband within an Iradi family setting. Unfortunately, all those in the know regarding the apparent death of Giovanni Antonio Ieradi are either dead, or keeping their mouths shut (e.g. the Argentine branch of the Iradi family “doesn’t know” either….)

Re: Giovanni Antonio Ieradi b.c.1860 in Cortale (Calabria), Italy
Hello, I do not know anything about Giovanni A ntonio Iradi. But I know that my grandfather was a Frits Iradi, I know that his fathers name was Candido Iradi and his father came from Venezuela to live in Bonaire a Dutch Caribbean Island. His son Frits was living in Curacao. Frits died in 1944 about . I have traced the ancestors of Frits my grand father but I am stuck some where. I am trying to contact people now in Venezuela to continue with my difficult task. I sure know that they came from Spain. I know also that their profession was sewing sails for sailing ship. My grandfather even sewed sails for the dictator in Venezuela Gomez. I hope I have been a little bit of help to you. and maybe you can help me. My grandfather lived in Curacao , Netherlands Antilles and died at a very young age.

Hi,
My surname was originally Ieradi, and was changed to IRADI when my grandfather immigrated to the USA.
The name IRADI is a Basque name, and comes from the name of the region in the Basque Country called "Iraty."
Most Latin Americans with the surname "Iradi" can eventually trace their ancestors back to the Basque Country - the exception being some with the name Iradi who live in and around Buenos Aires, who are the descendants of my grandfather's brother, who had immigrated to Buenos Aires.
The name Iradi in Europe has gained some notoriety, as the leader of the Basque seperatist movement ETA is named Iradi (he is presently in prison in France.)
There is a wonderful ewe's milk cheese sold in Europe called "Iraty-Ossau", which comes from this same section of the Basque country in Spain.
Good Luck with your search!

Thank you for your reply to my email. I have something which is also very interesting. Apparently my father has a mark on his left ear close to his face very small . It is a hole. He inherited from his father Frits Iradi. All his kids, including me have this small opening. Maybe you have heard of this too.Is there a way pictures are being posted by family members to see ? I have pictures too. Many thanks and regards, Josette Agniel_Vos (Iradi)

Re: Giovanni Antonio Ieradi b.c.1860 in Cortale (Calabria), Italy
My family tree is already posted in other threads on this same bulletin Board. All I essentially know is that my Great Grandfather, Giovanni Antonio Ieradi was from Cortale (Calabria), Italy and was born about 1860, as has already been stated.
One of his sons (i.e. Tomaso I(e)radi) ended up in Buenos aires as a young orphaned boy of about 8 years old (because his father had allegedly died there about 1895). Giovanni's other son (i.e. Antonio Salvatore I(e)radi) left Cortale, Italy and immigrated to New York City about 1904.
The Iradis of Venezuela and surroundings were Hispanics - not Italians. There were people with the last name "Iradi" already in places like the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean Islands VERY early on as the result of Spanish conquest, and I believe that a surname search in the database of Ancestry.com will reveal those various names and dates.
I would not be surprised if you were decended from one of those early Caribbean, HISPANIC lines, particularly given the fact that one of your recent ancestors bore the Dutch (i.e. Dutch-Caribbean) prename "Frits".
That being said, the EARLY ORIGINS of the surname 'Iradi" are in the Basque Country in the district of "Iraty" in Spain, as I've already stated. Therefore, those early "Iradi" sailors-colonists-raiders-planters-whatever who came to the Caribbean on Spanish Ships were very likely ethnic Basques.
Hope this helps, and good luck with your Caribbean/Venezuelan search for your Basque-cum-hispanic Iradi ancestors.
