I have recently dove back in to this family. Recently I found Jacob Idom Spearmans death record. It stated his mother was born in Abbeville. I have always knew of the name Idom but could not figure why Catherine would have an E in her name. She is listed as Catherine E Spearman in census records. I found out this weekend. Idom like most other names is spelled differently down through history. One of the most common ways is Eidom. That would explain why her middle initial is E instead of I. The name is of German/Denmark descent. Thus the fact that Catherine's father was from Prussia. I looked in the 1810 Abbeville census and found a Jacob Idam with a young daughter and two young sons. This is too much of a coincendence to me. I believe that Catherine named her son after his grandfather. Catherine Idom was my ggggrandmother.
