One of my ancestors was George Iddeson who lived at Kirkby Malzeard (a few miles north of Ripon) after his marriage. This was in the late 18thC. There were earlier Iddesons at KM, but I can not find a connection.

George married for the first time in 1765, at Ripley near Harrogate; his name was spelt as Edeson in the registers. There were other Edesons/Etesons at Ripley.

At Ripon there were Eedsons/Eadsons.

I am wondering if George came from Leeds and his baptism was 26.11.1740 George son of George Addison. There were also Eddisons at Leeds.

No William Iddeson.

It may be that they are conected, but the Iddesons I know are William (born around1831) and possibly a brother Richard who lived in Darlington. William stated on the census (1871) that he was born in Darlington, but cannot find him as yet on the Parish REgisters. I'll keep looking.

Many thanks for replying.
Was your Peter,Peter Seaton Iddeson who was born in Thornaby on Tees in August 1871?
If it was then we are on the same line.
Peter and Alice are on the 1901 Census at 3 Providence St Darfield.
I have them as having 3 children Emma ( 1896 Oldham ), Alfred 1899 ( Shaw Oldham) and Eliza 1901 ( Darfield)
This Peter had a brother William Thomas Iddeson, who was my mum's Grandfather.
is this the same family?

Hi Cath,

yes, it is the same family. so we must be distant relations. Peter was my Grandfather, although I never knew him, he died before I was born. My mother was Eliza. She married John James Jordan. In addition to the children listed on the 1901 census, Peter and Alice had three more children, Helen, William (Billy) and Susie, but I think Susie was a step daughter as I think Alice died and Peter remarried, but im not sure about this.

The all moved to Oldham sometime in the Thirties Billy married a girl called Ida and they moved to Australia in the 50s. , He died in the sixties but beleive it or not Ida is still alive and is in her late nineties Emma had one son Granville, Helen, four children, Peter, Alfred, Dorothy and Florence.Helen, and Susie live on WElbeck St in Oldham, and Eliza and My dad had a chip shop on Rochdale Road Oldham, until 1939 and then moved to Ward St in Oldham which is where I lived until I got married in 1965.

If you have any information on the family prior to Peter and Alice, it would be much appericiated

I have a family tree listed on Freinds Reunited, which you are welcome to look at. The log in words are

Hi Cath,
Bit more info which you may already have.

Found out that Alice, Peters wife's maiden name was Daniel-Howe, born in Shaw Lancs. Peter also had another daughter, Elizabeth but never knew her so she may have died young.

Hi
I am researching the edeson family tree and came across you message re kirkby malzeard mentioning the name as we know it. I believe the name was split into different ways of spelling during the 15-1600's because of illiteracy, this is making my research very difficult. I know that the Edesons all came from around Yorkshire so if you have any information that might help me I would be most grateful

I have also encountered numerous spellings of the name making it very hard to link families. I have have only found 2 generations of my Iddeson ancestors although I have found a lot of variants that I can not connect.

My ancestors were Mary Iddeson (1767-1832) later Mrs John Hutchinson and her father George Iddeson who died in 1791. George who was married twice, or more probably 3 times was survived by descendants who can be found at Kirkby Malzeard in the early 19thC. Mary, my ancestor was the only child from his first marriage - it appears her mother must have died near the time of her birth as the burial and baptism occur on the same day.

There were Iddesons at Kirkby Malzeard in the 17th and early 18th C. The most recent of these are baptisms in the 1720s/30s but then nothing else of the Iddeson family until George settled there.

George was married at Ripley near Harrogate in 1765 where the marriage in the parish register is recorded as between George Edeson and Mary Richardson. There was a well established Edeson family who lived at Clint in the parish of Ripley which has been researched by a few people. They were there throughout the 17thC. In the 19thC members of this family moved to Knaresborough whereon they became Eteson.

I have exchanged some information with a few people who have been researching the Ideson family who lived in the Bolton Abbey area. Again the spelling is various and includes Eedson.

There was also a family at Ripon where the name was usually spelt Eedson and Eedon.

I have also looked at the Armley area near Leeds as a descendant of George Iddeson was living there according to the 1851 census using a slightly different spelling of the surname. There were Eddisons at Armley in the 18thC and I did think this might have been where George originated, but although there were baptisms for children named George Eddison at the correct time, they do not link.

Do e-mail me directly if you want to exchange more information.

Regards,

Geoff.
