Hi

I am researching the Sheffield Flood (12th March 1864) and am trying to locate the graves of as many of the victims as possible, with a view to then further researching their family line.

Two members of the IBBOTSON family were drowned ; Stephen from Loxley (age 20) and Jonathan from Hillsborough (9).

Jonathan had been working all night, as usual, at Messrs. Shaw and Co wire mill a little below Damflask, along with John King, William Longden (Longley ?) and Charles Platts. All four were swept to their death when part of the mill was flooded and demolished.

Jonathan is recorded as being buried at Wadsley but, despite an extensive search of the graveyard, I have not yet managed to find his headstone. Stephen is recorded as being buried at Bradfield although he does not appear on the burial index for St Nicholas’s Church ??

Do you, by any chance, think they may be related to your family line? If so, could you supply any further info?
Look forward to hearing from you and thanks in anticipation of your reply.

Best Regards
