Hi - not sure if this helps -

the father from my grandfather was also named Alfredo iaconis (like me) and came from south Italy from a city called Vibo Valentia to Brazil. Year of immigration is unknown to me...

Hello Alfredo,
Thank you for responding to my post. Your english is very good. I am familiar with Vibo Valentia. It is near Nicastro. It is said that my great-grandfather, Vincenzo Francesco Bartolo (sometimes DeBartolo) was from Nicastro. I have not yet found his birth record. He was married to my great-grandmother, Anna Maria Iaconis of Caccuri. They lived in Caccuri. I do not yet know of any links between the Caccuri Iaconis family and the Vibo Valentia Iaconis family but if I find any connection, I will let you know. Thanks again.
Donna

I'm trying to trace my Iaconis family. My grandparents came from the town of Casino (now called Castelsilano) which is in the same province as Caccuri. Do you have any connections to Michael Iaconis (b.1883) or his siblings: Ernest, Frank, Joseph, Louis, Mary Ann, Rose, Salvatore, Theresa? This family has connections to surnames that include: Scalise, LaMana, and Oriolo.

Hi, I do not know of any connections between my Iaconis ancestors and the Iaconis families in Casino. However, Casino is extremely close to San Giovanni in Fiore and I do have connections to the Iaconis families there. Do you know the names of Michele's parents? Was Michele your immigrant ancestor? If so, can you tell me where he settled in the US? The following website may be of interest to you.

Thanks so much: Michael Iaconis was the son of Giovanni and Catherine Iconis. He came to the US ahead of my grandmother, probably after 1911. I know he was in Clarksburg, West VA in 1920. My grandmother, Rosina Scalise Iaconis, (with my aunt, Caterina Iaconis -age 9), came to the US in 1920 on the President Wilson, accompanied by Francesco Iaconis, her brother-in-law. They settled in Clarksburg, West VA. Sometime after 1925 they moved to Queens in NY.

That is interesting. My great-grandmother, Anna Maria Iaconis was married to Vincenzo DeBartolo. Eventually all 7 of Anna Maria and Vincenzo's children immigrated to the US and settled in a small town, near Clarksburg, called Shinnston, WV.

There was a chain migration from the towns around San Giovanni in Fiore, Casino, Caccuri, etc. to Clarksburg and surrounding towns. They came to work in the coal mines of WV. Cousins sent for cousins and eventually entire famililes were relocated to the same area. Here is another link that you might find interesting:

Are you familiar with the Mining disaster that happened in Monongah, WV on December 6th 1907? It is the most deadly coal mining disaster in US history. Monongah is one of those little mining towns near Clarksburg. Many Italians died in the disaster and more than a few were from San Giovanni in Fiore. Two of the miners listed as killed were Giovanni and Francesco Yacones. I believe that "Yacones" must surely be a bad spelling of the name Iaconis. I have seen Iaconis spelled similarly in census records. In Italian, the letter "i" is pronounced "ee," so Iaconis would sound a lot like Yacones. Anyway, I wonder if there is a link between your Iaconis family and the two men that died in Monongah in 1907.

Do you know Michael's mother's maiden name? If I do any searches in the Casino or San Giovanni in Fiore records (on microfilm) in the future I will keep an eye out for Giovanni and Catherine (likely Caterina).

Thanks so much for your info. I will follow up on the mining disaster. Thanks for offering to watch for my great grandmother's name, but I don't have a surname for her. I appreciate your help.
