Tracking relatives from Sicily to Bayridge Brooklyn/NJ. My father-in-laws family originally came from Lipari/Messina Sicily and settled in NY then some including my husband's family ended up in NJ.

My wife's maiden name is Iacono. She and her 3 older brothers were born in Port Empedocle, in the province of Agrigento. She came to the US with her parents in 1960. The parents still live in Brooklyn.

Surnames: Iacono, Benenati, Malfetti, Gemmola and Conti
My wife's greatgrandmother was a Margherite Iacono, born in the Sant'Anna area of the island of Lipari (if you know the island, near the hospital) to Domenico Iacono and Rosaria Benenati in the 1860s. She married an Alesandro Malfetti from Fojano, Arezzo, Tuscany.
They had two children in Italy Maria Elisabetta, b. Lipari, and Angelo,b. Fojano. In 1889 they came to New York from Palermo and settled on the eastside of Manhattan. A sister of Margherite came with them. Part of the family married Gemmolas and Contis and settled in the Jersey City area. A Iacono brother Vincenzo, a seaman who lost a leg in an accident, also came to New York. During WW I when his son died in the army and his wife shortly thereafter, he drowned in the East River.

i am not sure if the family is connected but my maiden name is Iacona and my father's name was Frank Iacona he passed away in Aug 1988. He resided in Brooklyn, NY all of his life. I also have a living uncle in Brooklyn who has also lived there all of his life. His name is Victor Iacona. I am not sure if there is a connection...but if there is Id like to know.

Nicole, my husband had an Uncle Frank in Brooklyn. I don't know of a Victor though. If your father's name was Frank, what was your mother's name? I don't think our Frank had any children. I do know there was another Iacona family in Brooklyn. I once met a Mike Iacona while we were stationed in Italy with the Air Force. His family was from Brooklyn also, but no relation. Surprisingly I have found there are alot more Iaconas than I realized. Let me know about your Mom's name. Feel free to just write me at cmi51@aol.com. Incidentally we have now ended up in Texas for the last 13 years. My husband retired from the Air Force then and we settled here.

I don't know of any other Iacona family's except mine. We are in California. My grandfather Carmelo came here from Sicily in the early 1900's. His 3 brothers came also, Frank, Nino & Vince. Only one brother went back to Sicily. The rest of us

The rest of us stayed here in California. My great-grandparents names are Vincenzo Iacona and Maria Taormina. It would be great to find out we are related to some of you in New Jersey.

Nina, nice to hear from you. No connection that I know of between families, but I bet if we go far enough back there probably is. My husband's grandparents were from Sicily as well, and my research says lots and lots of Iacona/Iaconos were from Sicily. We've been there when my husband was still in the Air Force, to Sicily that is. Here's a funny coincidence too. You said your relatives maiden name was Taormina, we stay in Taormina, Sicily. It is a lovely town overlooking the sea. Do you know if that is where she is from. If you want, contact me at cmi51@aol.com. My son lives out in California, outside LA.
