In 1883, my great grandparents, Thomas and Agnes LINDSAY, set sail from Glasgow in Scotland for New Zealand on the "Wild Deer". Unfortunately, it hit a rock off the Irish coast and sunk. While no one drowned, they and their fellow passengers lost all their possessions. A month later, they sailed out to New Zealand on the "Caroline". Their passage was sponsored by Mr O HYWELL.
I have always been curious as to why he should have been especially benevolent to my family and wondered if there was more to the relationship.
The only other reference I have been able to find to Mr O. HYWELL was that, as a passenger from Dunedin, he left from Lyttelton, New Zealand, for London on the direct steamer "Ruapehu" on 7 July 1892.
I would like to make contact with any members of the HYWELL family whose ancestors may have had business connections with New Zealand.
