Jessie Fletcher Hyskell was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, June 12, 1839, and died Sept. 18, 1918, age 79 years, 3 months and 6 days. He was one of the first volunteers at the beginning of the Civil War and served his country three years and six months. He was in the 9th Pennsylvania Reserves. He carried a wound from the Civil War. Returning from the Army to his native state he was married to Sarah Jane Call April 10, 1866, and to this union were born two sons and eight daughters, five of whom are living, two sons and one daughter having preceded the mother and father in death. He moved from Pennsylvania to western Nebraska in 1887 and lived there about three years when he moved to western, Kansas, and from there to Missouri. He came to LaHarpe about seven years ago, where he has resided till the end. He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church early in life and held his membership in the M.E. Church at Bliss, Idaho where he spent some time. He was a member of the LaHarpe M.E. Church for a number of years. He came from a family of pioneer Methodists. He was down town twice the day of his death and was about the house and conversed with his daughter, Mrs. Minnie Kerlin just a few minutes before the end came. The passing was sudden for he was sitting in his chair when the end came. He leaves five daughters and thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren to mourn his departure. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. M. B. Mehl. Burial in the Gas City Cemetery.
