Classification: Obituary
WARREN – Elouise D. (Martin) Hyre, 86, died Sunday at 3:12 p.m., Feb. 21, 2010, at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

She was born April 17, 1923 in Alliance, Ohio the daughter of the late Stanton T. and Pearl Martin.

She and her husband, John moved to the Warren, Ohio area in 1955.

She was a thoughtful friend and neighbor and a mentor to young people. She especially loved working with kids. Elouise was a Cub Scout pack leader, leader of two Girl Scout troops at once, Vacation Bible School teacher and Speech and Debate judge. She worked with the Girl Scout Troop at Fairhaven and a private group that arranged parties for physically and mentally handicapped children.

For the Ohio Arts Council “Cultures of the Past” public school program, she demonstrated and explained antique items to primary school children throughout the area. Most recently, through the Red Cross and the Niles Community Center, Elouise spent countless hours making quilts for children in hospitals. She also made frequent donations to the Warren Family Mission.

Elouise was a 1942 graduate of Alliance High School. Following graduation, she joined the World War II effort, developing the x-rays of gun parts for Navy combat ships for Babcock and Wilcox Company.

She retired in 1989 as the manager of Waldenbooks in the Eastwood Mall, where she worked for 17 years. She was of the Presbyterian faith.

Shortly after Thanksgiving Day in 1941, Elouise met her future husband, John M. Hyre, from French Creek, West Virginia and they were engaged during one of his furloughs.

They were married May 5, 1946 at the Alliance First Presbyterian Church, six months after John returned from the European Theatre. They were married just short of 64 years.

Elouise is survived by her husband, two sons, John M. (Silvia) Hyre Jr. of Columbus, Ohio and Hugh M. (June) Hyre of Lewisville; one daughter, Mary H. (Daniel) Scafidi of Tallmadge, Ohio; three grandchildren, John M. (Carolina) Hyre III, Lisa (David) Hyre Timms and Sarah Elizabeth Scafidi; five great-grandchildren, Alexandra Hyre, John M. Hyre IV, Isabela Hyre and Grant and Annaleese Timms; and one brother, Lawson (Dorothy) Martin and Lt. Col. Retired of Annandale, Va.

Two sisters, Imogene Poland and Dorothy P. Frahm, both preceded her in death.

Elouise has left many bereft family members, including the furry love of her life, a Snowshoe Siamese. The fact that she named the feline “Damn Cat” only demonstrates her love of making people laugh. She was bright and witty and imaginative, she was colorful, vibrant and full of life.

Arrangements are being handled by the Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel in Warren, Ohio where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at the funeral home with the Rev. David Robert Black officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Warren Family Mission, 361 Elm Road N.E., Warren, OH 44483.
