Charles S. Hymers, LTC (Ret)
passed away June 9, 2011
at Fairfax Retirement Home, Fort Belvoir, Va.
He was born November 5, 1920 in Erie, Pa. He graduated from Academy High School in 1939. He served in WW II, landing on Layte and Okinawa. After 30 years of military service, he worked for Northrop Grumman Corporation. After his retirement, he became active as a community leader in the Mt. Vernon/Belvoir area, especially with the Ft. Belvoir Catholic Community. He served in a number of positions with the Mt. Vernon Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) including president. He was the first Grand Knight of the Ft. Belvoir Council of the Knights of Columbus. In addition to his military decorations, he was the recipient of the medal of the Archdiocese for Military Services in 1995 and in 2004 received the Aaron Hur award from the Chief of Chaplains office. He was selected as the Knight of the Year by the State of Virginia in 2005. He was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Baltus Hymers; his son, Lt. Charles S. Hymers, III; and his daughter, Maureen.
He is survived by his son, Kevin; daughter-in-law, Robyn; three granddaughters;
and two great-grandsons;
sisters-in-law, Catherine Baltus Thierer and Sr. Mary Matthew Baltus.
A funeral mass was offered at Ft. Belvoir Woodlawn Chapel on June 15, 2011. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. Memorial contributions can be made to the Belvoir Knights of Columbus Council (K of C), PO Box 387, Ft. Belvoir, VA 22060.
