Hi ..

I'm looking for information on a Samuel Hyatt listed in the 1830 Mason Co KY census. He was 40-49 years old, married wife was 30-39 years old. At the time of this 1830 census they had 6 children. 3 boys - and 3 girls.

Can anyone help me with this family?

Thank you,

Cay Devin

Hi Cay,

I'm trying to connect Samuel to a family as well. Most of the Hyatt's in this area spelled their surname Hieatt and were very particular about it, and it's possible they wrote his name wrong on earlier records. This is what I have for him:

Marriage 25 May 1811: Record #515 Samuel Hiatt to Fanny Bell Bondsman: Daniel Bell

1820: (pg. 15 of the census for Mason County, township not stated).
Samuel Hieatt - head of household (presumably the male age 26-44)

Free White Persons - Males - 26 thru 44: 1
Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 26 thru 44: 1
Number of Persons - Engaged in Agriculture: 1
All Other Persons Except Indians not Taxed: 5

1830: same info you have

Possible Death:
Samuel Hiatt on 10 Apr 1856 in Shelby County, KY
Father's name: J Hiatt
Mother's name: E Hiatt

What is your connection to Samuel? That may help.

UPDATE:

Per the 1850 Shelby census this is the family of the Samuel who died in 1856. It looks like their surname may have been Hite instead of Hiatt. They may or may not be connected to the Samuel of Mason County:

Name: Joseph Hite
Age: 75
Birth Year: abt 1775
Birthplace: Virginia
Home in 1850: District 2, Shelby, Kentucky
Gender: Male
Family Number: 514
Household Members:
Name Age
Joseph Hite 75
Elizabeth Hite 53
Ellen Hite 18
Nancy Hite 21
Samuel Hite 15
M Huey Hite 9

I'm looking for family for my gggrandmother - Sarah "Sallie" Hyatt - some have even spelled it Hiatt. Sarah was born 26 Oct 1812 in KY. She married Benjamin Franklin Hopkins before 1836 in KY, and sometime around 1840 they moved south - first to TN then to Tishomingo Co MS.

We have always thought Hyatt was Sarah's maiden name, and it still might be but recently through DNA testing we have discovered that her first son born 24 Jun 1833 - William Arachei Hopkins was not a Hopkins. So it's possible that Sarah was actually married to a Hyatt/Hiatt. So I started looking at every possible Hyatt/Hiatt in KY during that time frame and that lead me to Samuel.

What is very interesting is that your 1820 census for Samuel shows a daughter under the age of 10. Sarah would have been 8 then. Do you have any info on this daughter?

Thank you,

Cay Devin

Cay, has he done Y-DNA testing? If he's a Hyatt then he should match one of the men in the Hyatt DNA project: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/Hyatt/results

My Hyatt line is in the project as well and I'm an amateur genetic genealogist, so if you private message me I can help interpret his results. I'll also look through my database for Sarah and see if anything pops up.

Sunny,

I wasn't even aware of worldfamilies. I have my DNA out on Gedmatch and familyfinderDNA. I will contact Renee and find out where else she and her male cousins have their DNA. Hopefully we can get them onto worldfamilies too, and see if they match up with anyone there.

Thank you for your kind offer of help in interpreting the results. Will let her know.

Sounds good Cay. WorldFamilies.net cooperates with FamilyTreeDNA and is an easier way for admins to organize DNA projects. So, technically the project is through FTDNA. All they have to do is use the "Join" link at either WorldFamilies.net or FTDNA.com. If he tested YDNA though then he should have Hyatt matches if he's from one of the known lines, but some people limit their match info to people who are in their project only, so it still helps to join sometimes.
