Alexandra, My Great-Grandfather (Jefferson Henry Hyams) and your Great-Great-Grandmother (Katherine) were brother and sister. Katherine was the only daughter of Mordecai Elisha Hyams and Caroline Frederica Hyams. The had 7 children. Washington, John, Jefferson, Katherine, George, Charlie, Fred. My parents who live in Charlotte, N.C. have pictures of all 7 children and Mordecai and Caroline. Mordecai was born in Charleston, S.C. in 1819. Caroline was born in Wurtemburg, Germany in 1829. We do not know how they met but they were married in Florida. During the Civil War Mordecai was stationed in North Carolina and remained there after the war. Mordecai died in 1891 in Statesville, N.C. and Caroline died in Old Fort, N.C. in 1911. She lived with her son George Hyams in her last years. They are buried in Statesville, N.C. My parents have pictures of Katherine and Mr. Herring. They also have a picuture of Gertrude Herring as a child 3-4 years old. Katherine looked like her father Mordecai. Our family tree from Jefferson Henry Hyams is fairly short. Jefferson Married Margaret Penland Hyams. They had 3 children, Mabel, (1880) Homer (1886)and Robert (1892) Robert was the only one who had a child. Robert Henry Hyams married Claudia Suddreth Hyams They had one child my father Robert Penland Hyams. (1925) Robert Penland Hyams married Evelyn Silver Hyams They had 3 children Susan (1952) Robert Jr.(1954) and Claudia Ann (1961) I am Robert Jr. Mordecai kept a scrap book and we have many newspaper articles on him and his family. We knew that Katherine had remarried and moved to Virginia, but that is where the trail ended. It would be great to trace her family forward. Please let me know, I Know my parents would love to hear from you as would I. I can get you there E-mail address We think Mordecai's parents were Solomon M Hyams and Katherine ? Hyams. Sorry I forgot Katherine's maiden name We always thought Your Katherine was named after her grandmother. Look forward to hearing from You. Your Cousin Robert Hyams

Dear Robert,
I read your response to Alexandra re: the Hyams Family.
My grandmother, Annie Hyams Dalton, was the daughter of George and Maggie Hyams of Old Fort, NC. I recall my grandmother often mentioning her grandmother's name, Caroline "Ferdinand" Schieffler (sp?). Do you suppose that "Ferdinand" was her family nickname? My mother, Helen, and I have been interested in information about Mordecai and Solomon Hyams for some time. My mother is the owner of the "Hyams' House" in Old Fort built (approx. 1907-10) by George and Maggie for themselves and their 14 children. We visit there as often as we can.
If you are able to share copies of photos or clippings from the scrapbook you mentioned, my mother would be delighted.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Doris

I am a botanist and doing a small article on Mordecai Hyams for the NC Botanical Garden newsletter. I am curious to know how Mr. Hyams became a Presbyterian... Another of our botanists, Rev. Charles E. Raynal, was a Presbyterian minister in Statesville, NC and knew Charles Hyams, Mordecai's son. Was it through friendship and botany with Rev. Raynal that Mordecai converted?

We are not sure when Mordecai converted. All of his children were raised as Christians. Our best guess is he converted when he married his wife. (Caroline) They were married in late 1840's.

Hi, Mordecai and Caroline Hyams were my great, great grandparents. Their son George McQueen Hyams was my great grandfather. His daughter, Annie, was my grandmother. My sister and I have received quite a bit of family history from cousins who were descendants of Jefferson Hyams (brother of George, Katherine, Washington, and Charles). We have almost no information about Katherine's line although we knew she married a Herring and lived in Norfolk. I am traveling this week to Old Fort, NC and will be with my sister at the Hyams House which we inherited. Much of our family info is there so we can pull some things together for you and will be delighted to share. We have pictures and various newspaper clippings. We would love to learn more about Katherine's descendants from you. :)

Wow, this made my day. What timing, just before your trip back to the family home. I just spoke with my father-in-law who is 81 years young and we will be visiting him sometime this week to look for family pictures which i will scan to share with you all. As I mentioned, Katherine Hyams Herring's daughter was Gertrude Hazel Herring. She was a "Chorus Girl" who sang, danced and played the piano. She met her husband, Raymond Francis Crutsinger (who sang Opera)
while they were Vaudeville performers on the road. My father-in-law also mentioned that she was married once before to another man,"that really must have messed up, she told him to get of her house and never come back, and she never heard from him again" He remembers she lived in a house on 25th Street in Norfolk, VA. Very interesting to me is the my husbands family are all very musically inclined and share the love of plants and gardening. Looking forward to hearing from you, if you would email me at LaDona63@yahoo.com, your email, I'll send futrue correspondence that way. I really appreciate any and all that you can share. Take care and have a safe trip!

Hi Jim, My grandmother was Annie Hyams Dalton who was a sister of your grandmother. My mother was Helen. My sister Linda and I inherited the Hyams House in Old Fort. This is the house that was owned by George McQueen and Maggie Hyams our great grandparents. We have lots of family info and pictures. Linda lives in Indiana and I'm in Virginia but we plan to be in Old Fort at the Hyams House in mid-April. We haven't settled on a date yet. We love sharing about the Hyams family so we would welcome a visit from you if you are able. We can make copies and have them for you or mail some things to you if you wish and we would love adding your part of the family tree to our collection. I remember Mama talking about the Connors and Aunt 'Lil.' I think she was close to her cousin 'Kat'. Glad we've connected. Hope we can get together. Doris
