Hi all, and welcome to the Hvizda board.

Hvizda means "star" in our homeland of Austria. From my findings so far, all of the Hvizda lines trace back our Slovak roots in Austria.

My particular line of Hvizda's decends from John Hvizda, born in Hazlin Hungary in 1852 who came to the USA and settled in Mt. Carmel PA. I know there are at least 3 other Hvizda line in PA alone, maybe we will find an old world link for our families.

I am hoping this can be a great place for us to connect, share our findings and create a positive community for sharing.

Kim

HI,

My great-great Grandfather, John Hvizda, was born in Raslavice in 1886. He immagrated to the USA, and put Hazlin Hungary on his paperwork as his hometown. Not sure at what point his family may have moved from Raslavice. When I was doing family research in Salt Lake City, I was able to look through baptism records form Raslavice from the late 1800's, and saw many Hvizda's there. WOnder if we are related??

Kim

Dear All, My name is Peter HVIZDA, I am from Slovakia, from Bardejov area (east part of Slovakia). Hvizda means star in our dialect calls "šariščina". My grandfathers name is Eduard Hvizda, he was born 1922 in Raslavice, his mother called Veronica. Raslavice is a village between Bardejov and Prešov. I have never heard about Hvizda Family in Hažlin, but Hažlin is in Bardejov area, that means in Slovakia not in Hungary (but used to by). If somebody has some information associated with this name, please contact me. Thanks.

Slovak history in Hungary, a short overview

Since 1276 Austria ruled over many people and countries, and in the nineteenth-century one of these lands was the Hungarian kingdom which included the Slovak people.
Austria maintained its traditional leadership until it was drawn into the "Seven Weeks' War of 1866." After Austria was defeated, Hungary was in a position to barter for more power, and the Ausgleich, or Compromise, of 1867 gave Hungary legal equality with Austria.

Thus, Austria-Hungary, also called the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the Dual Monarchy came into existence in 1867 and lasted until 1918

Austria-Hungary was a land of many different peoples. Each nationality group had its own part of the country and was almost a separate unit. Twelve million Germans and ten million Magyars dominated twenty-three million Slavs, three million Rumanians, and many smaller groups. The weaker groups were devoted to their own customs and languages. People were loyal to a nationality group, rather than to Austria-Hungary. World War I, which changed the map of Europe, completely destroyed the Dual Monarchy.

The land area of Austria-Hungary, including that of Bosnia-Herzegovina, was 261,241 square miles. It was slightly smaller than Texas.
Janos Hvizda 1888

Spending the week in Utah at the Family History Library. Found lots of church records of Hvizda's in the Roman Catholic Church records from Hazslin.

All of the records at the church after 1889 have the name spell HVIZDA. Prior to that, the records are spelled HVIEZDA. There was a change of priests at this time in the parish, so I would guess that is why the spelling changes.

There are very few entries for this name prior to 1865...thinking this is not their original town. After Janos gets out of the military in 1889 and settles here, there are several Hvizda families showing up in the records. They seem to be married to Zapatocki and Vagatski quite often.

It appears this Janos Hvizda married Zsuzsanna Mestsan (later spellings include Meschan and Mezshan)while living in Hazslin. They later immigrated to Mt. Carmel, PA in the USA.

The part of Hungary that this line of the Hvizda family immigrated is in Saros County. It is in present day Slovakia. At different times it was Hungarian, or part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Previous records I had found in PA erroniously listed them as from Austria.

Looking forward to hearing from other Hvizda relatives.

Kim

Kim

The present Slovak Republic was under Hungary's rule not Austria. http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
In proper Slovak the spelling is Hviezda which can also have other meaning than a "star". http://slovnik.zoznam.sk
Surname HVIZDA does show up in area code 054 (Bardejov) but none in Hazlin's phone book. www.zoznamst.sk
Interesting sites: www.geoportal.sk/roep/e.php
www.maplandia.com
www.helenezx.homestead.com
www.slovakfolkcrats.com
www.slovakinstitute.com
www.spectacularslovakia.sk
From www.obce.info village Hazlin has 1239 inhabitants.
The LDS-Mormons site is listing Roman Catholic and Greek Catholic church records of Hazlin.
www.iabsi.com/gen/public
www.surnamenavigator.org
