JACKSONVILLE - John G. "Jack" Husa, 73, of Jacksonville died Monday, May 23, 2005, at Passavant Transitional Care Unit in Jacksonville.

He was born Oct. 20, 1931, in Oak Park, the son of James C. and Hermina Svoboda Husa. He married Shirley Jean Barrowman in 1953 in Joliet.

Mr. Husa graduated from J. Sterling Morton High School in Cicero in 1949 and Northern Illinois University in DeKalb in 1953. He was a U.S. Army veteran, graduating from the Army Intelligence School in Fort Riley, Kan. and serving for two years. He earned a Masters of Science in biological science from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1964.

He taught in Elmhurst public schools and at Northern Illinois University; served as chairman of the botany department at Eastern Illinois University; set up the audio-tutorial program in the science department at MacMurray College in 1970; taught microbiology and bacteriology at Illinois College part time; and worked with A.G. Edwards before opening his own office and retiring in 1993.

He was a member of the Elks Club, past member and board member of Kiwanis and past member of The Club, a literary society. He served on the Jacksonville Library and Jacksonville Theatre Guild boards and helped organize the Jacksonville Writers Club and Friends of the Library.

Survivors: wife, Shirley; two daughters, Susan (husband, Steve) Carls of Arenzville and Janie (husband, Ward) Stephens of Greenville, S.C.; six grandchildren; and two brothers, James (wife, Margaret) Husa of Lawrence, Mich., and Harold (wife, Florence) Husa of DeKalb.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, First Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville. Private committal services: at a later date.

Cody and Son Memorial Home is in charge of arrangements.
