James B Cabell in his 1918 article in the William & Mary Quarterly stated that there were two Robert Hunnicutts: that BOTH Augustine and John had sons by that name. Lately, some have claimed that there was only one Robert, the son of Augustine.

I have found a record here on Ancestry from 'Surry County Records, Book II, Mar 1671 - 5 July 1684' that shows Robert Hunnicutt as a witness in a court action. The date given is 18 Feb 1678/9. I assume that in order to act as witness to a will, debt or other commercial transaction, the person's age must be at least 21 years. That would give this Robert Hunnicutt a birthdate of before 1657/8.

John Hunnicutt who married Elizabeth Warren in 1670/1 and is thought to have been born abt 1650 is obviously too young to have been father to this Robert Hunnicutt.

Likewise, this Robert Hunnicutt would have been over 40 in 1700, a contemporary of Peter Wyke and not Peter's daughter, Margaret, who was married about that time. This Robert Hunnicutt would also have achieved the remarkable age (for this era) of 80 - 90 if he died between 1740 and 1752 as Robert, husband to Margaret, did. He would have been about 60 when Margaret's youngest child was born. He would have been over 21 when apprenticed to Peter Wyke the shoemaker, who arrived in Virginia in 1677. None of this is impossible, but it seems highly unlikely.

It seems to me that Margaret Wyke's husband, Robert Hunnicutt, must have been a 2nd person, the son of John. I think her husband was was born abt 1675; he would have been 14 in 1689, the year Peter Wyke took on another apprentice (Robert Cate) to the shoemaker's trade. He would have been 25 in 1700, a ripe age for marrying. He would have been between 65 and 77 when he died between 1740 and 1752.

I still can offer no PROOF that John was the father of Margaret Wyke's husband, Robert Hunnicutt. But one last thing: Robert and Margaret Wyke Hunnicutt had a large family and named a son 'John'. No Augustine that we know of.
