I have tried to reach the person I knew who was tracking this line. We'll see if he responds. Anyway, from some old correspondence I get the idea that this descendant of J.J. Humphries had Y-DNA that matched a man who thought he was a descendant of Joseph Humphries and Elizabeth Tignor of Northumberland Co., VA. But I don't think anyone had yet worked out where J.J. Humphries fit into that family. That was a year or two ago. Maybe someone knows more now. I will let you know if my correspondent replies to a query. Charlene

Hi, Clare,

I think the fellow did make at least a paper connection with one of the half dozen or so other Humphries families that made their way south and west from Virginia and Pennsylvania from the 1600s on. Let me see if I can find my old correspondence. His Y-DNA did not match that of any other Humphries who participated in the familytreeDNA project including the family of Charles Humphries of Union and Chester Co. SC. No one particularly thought that J.J. was related to that family, but we know now that he definitely was not. I'll see what I can find but I can't guarantee anything will turn up.
my great grandmother was pelhams sister. when my mother died in 1981 we got a floral arrangement from spinal top oil. at the time we couldn't figure out for the life of us why she would get this from texas when we live in tn. we didn't know the story at the time. I wish I had saved that tag from those flowers. it would show a direct link. someone at spindle top knew and was related to my mother and had heard of her passing. it wasn't until we heard about the lawsuit that I had remembered the flowers sent to her. this has always been a daydream of mine to hope maybe one day we might see a little money or that my children would. my grandmother was Helen Patterson. we have pictures of Pelham and all the Humphries clan. and I recently got to go to the bell cemetery in texas were all our relatives are buried. very emotional and I hope for all that are involved that maybe someday we will be redeemed. the only thing good about the whole situation is I have met cousins that I didn't even know existed. which was wonderful

Thank you for responding.

So while this helps me confirm that JJ Humphries and Polly Smith were married, it does not help me explain his own lineage. That's because you are able to exclude him as kin of Charles Humphries, but do not necessarily have any other info. Do I understand correctly ?

Thank you again for sending this info.

An all-male line descendant of J. J. Humphries completed a familytreeDNA Y-DNA test. His markers are listed at the Humphrey (Humphries) family project at familytreeDNA under John Jefferson Humphries. You can see the results listed on the Y-DNA classification table at the website. The test confirmed that J.J. Humphries was NOT related to the large group of Humphries family members in Union County SC that were descended from Charles Humphries, originally of Brunswick Co., VA. Charles Humphries's descendants are documented in the book,"Ancestors and Descendants of Charles Humphries d. 1837 of Union District S.C. 1677-1984" written by Brent Holcomb. J.J. was married to Polly Smith, a daughter of Abraham Smith.

Hello. That's great that you are descended from Amos! Brent Holcomb deals with Amos's family of origin in his 1985 book "Ancestors and Descendants of Charles Humphries (d. 1837) of Union District, South Carolina 1677-1984." This book may be found in many libraries. On page 4 Mr. Holcomb shows a birth date of 27 December 1749 for Charles's son John (Amos's father). I believe this comes from a family Bible housed in a local archive in SC, so it is pretty certain (see also p.11) . John was almost certainly born in Virginia--his father lived there until 1765. Charles moved to Johnston Co., NC about then and lived on land purchased from his brother William. John would have been about 16 then so probably traveled to NC with his family when they moved there. Charles moved on to Chester Co., SC in 1779, but son John may have moved there before him. As a note, Charles, the father, was probably not born as early as 1715. That was just a guess by an early author. Charles appears to be the youngest of four sons of John and Mary White Humphries who were bequeathed a piece of property in their father's will of 1738. The land was on Allen's Creek in Brunswick County, Va. It appears the brothers waited until Charles came of age to sell the land (probably so they didn't have to deal with their mother and step-father in selling it). If Charles was at least 21 in 1747 when the brothers sold some of the land, that puts his birth at about 1726. Holcomb notes that there is no proof that Charles's wife was Mary Bennett. They named a son Bennett, so it could be true but is not proven. No connections with any Bennett families have been established to date. John Humphries's family Bible shows his wife's name to be Elizabeth Timms, rather than Thomas. Some histories state that Elizabeth's family came from "across the waters," but if they did, it was a long time before Elizabeth's day since there is evidence that the Timms and Humphries families interacted for two and possibly three generations before John and Elizabeth married. The information that you have about John and Elizabeth's children seems to match what is shown on page 11 of Holcomb's book. I think something is known about all of the children except for David. Wish someone knew or would tell what happened to him! There are still some mysteries about this family that might be solved with further research.

Charner Humphries son of John and Elizabeth was my great great great uncle. One of his many brothers was named Amos who was my GGG grandfather. Somehow he decided to come to MS probably because of the cotton boom. My grandfather's name was Jasper and his grandfather was Amos as well. They established their residence in Winston county. I have a lot of information on this because my mother at one time wanted to become member of DAR. I have all the children's names and there is a lot of information on internet about family.
Demaris, I think I have seen a copy of that letter. I believe someone put it on the internet. Very interesting information. Some of the older people in our family did not pronounce the "H" so the name came out Umphries. I have to check the U's whenever I look for the family because sometimes they are listed there instead of under the H's, but most of us in our branch pronounce the H. We have a cluster of descendants of Charles and Willliam Humphries (sons of John Humphries d. 1738 and Mary White) in the Humphrey familytreeDNA project. We have all male-line descendants of William and Charles that match but we could use some more descendants of Charles to check against. Are there any male Humphries in your family still living? Do you think they would consider doing the familytreeDNA Y-DNA test? You have to test for at least 37 markers for the results to be any good. Usually that costs about $150 but sometimes they have sales. I would advise that one of your male Humphries relatives take the test. If they are the last of the male line in your family, valuable genetic information will be lost when they pass away. My line is: my grandfather Charles William Humphries (b. GA), William Henry Humphries II (b. GA), William Henry Humphries (b. GA), John Humphries (b. SC), William Humphries (b. NC), John "the saddler" Humphries (b. VA), William Humphries (b. VA), John Humphries who m. Mary White and probably Evan Humphries. There is still no direct evidence connecting John Humphries who married Mary White with Evan Humphries, so I always qualify that link. It is probably true, but I am still looking for evidence. Some people say that John and Mary's son William went to Onslow NC after he left Virginia, but that is not so. He went to Johnston/Wake Co. NC. Brother Charles bought land from him when he moved there. William went on to western SC before Charles moved there. Some of William's descendants drifted on down to Georgia, near Atlanta and were there when Sherman marched through. (They were actually not far from where Charner Humphries set up Whitehall and may have been in contact with him.) Sherman destroyed their property and sent the family, including the women and children, to a refugee camp in Jeffersonville, IN.

I look forward to seeing your Humphries work when it is ready.

First, regarding Thomas Jefferson Humphries of Mississippi: My grandpapa, John david Humphries, Sr., corresponded with a Charles Humphries, who was, at that time, Sheriff of Trigg County, KY. Charles sent Grandpapa a copy of a letter that was written to Locke Humphries by Thomas Jefferson Humphries in 1876. It gives an extensive genealogy of that Humphries line, with small anecdotes and mention of Revolutionary War service. Unlike the Union County, SC Humphries, those in Kentucky apparently did pronounce the "H."

This is my line:
Demaris Guest Humphries, John David Humphries, Jr., John David Humphries, Sr., Amos Daniel Humphries, John Thomas Burroughs Humphries, John Humphries, John Humphries, Charles Humphries, John Humphries (Humphrey), Evan Humphrey, Evan Humphries.

Our male Humphries line also has ended. My brother was the only son of an only married son with progeny. My brother had one daughter! But there are many Humphries cousins as my great grandfather was one of four brothers.

Demaris Guest Humphries Miller

Hello, Demaris. My article published in 2010 in the South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research (SCMAR) called "A Tale of Two Charners" was meant to help differentiate between the Charner Humphries of Chester county who went to the Atlanta area around 1835 and Charner Humphries who died in Union co., SC around 1838. These two had been frequently confused with each other and the article provided clear evidence that they really were two separate people. The article has almost 40 references so should be interesting to people who are related to this family. The hypothesis that Union County Charner was a son of Richard Humphries was advanced there. The title was not meant to imply that there were no other men ever named Charner Humphries. My understanding is that Charner and Mary Darby Humphries's son Charner Jr. died without issue as did Charner's brother George. I read that Charner Jr.'s brothers John and Asa were implicated in a murder and left town before they could be questioned about it. It seems that they were never seen or heard from again (at least publicly). So all known descendants of Charner and Mary Darby Humphries come through their daughters, but there could be descendants of the two sons somewhere. The descendants may not even know they are Humphries, if the brothers lived and assumed different names. I don't think I knew about the Charner who was the son of Thomas Jefferson Humphries and Mary Knowles. It is interesting that the name lasted in the family so long. I am writing a history of the Humphries family to follow up Brent Holcomb's book on the family. What is your line from the Humphries? Mine is from the first Charles Humphries's brother William.

I just found your post. My husband is the 3rd g grand son of John Gabriel Humphries , his father was Amos Humphries, brother to Charner Humphries. Francis Humphries was their sister. their father was John Humphries 1749-1815, his wife Elizabeth Timms (Thomas), Father of John was Charles Humphries 1721-1803, wife Mary Bennett 1720-1779. Father of Charles was John Humphries 1690-1750, wife Mary White 1692-1750. I have more on the Humphries, but I am trying to connect the Stokes family. I know that Francis Humphries married a Stokes & Littleton was her son. I have a photo of Littleton & Charner together. Charner & his family moved from Chester,SC. to Georga, where in 1835 he built a tavern called "The White Hall". This later became a US post office. There is a lot of Information on the webb. about this building ,if you are interested in checking it out. hope you are still looking for this information. thank you M. Humphries

Your grandfather, William Shade, was my grandfather's older brother which makes us second cousins. My grandfather was James Alfred. He called his brother Bill, so my Dad (also named Shade) called him uncle Bill. Their father was Shade, son of John Joseph (Joel) Humphries, and was born in Georgia in 1836. Moved to East Texas (Cass County) just before civil war broke out. Walked to Arkansas to enlist in Confederacy. Was with the Tennessee 40th and captured when the regiment was defeated at 10 mile island near Madras Missouri and put in prison in Illinois. Was released in exchange for yankee prisoners. Joined up with the famous Arkansas 15th and was in the battle of Port Hudson, near Baton Rouge.Survived war with his cousin, also named William.I have a picture of your grandpa and grandma, if you would like a copy, email me.

I am seeking information on the family of William John Humphries and Martha Webb. Their children were Edith, William Francis, Elsie, Ernest George, Lillian Alice, and Harry Fredrick. I know for sure that William and Ernest emigrated to the US, but believe that their siblings all remained in the UK. I am William's grandson and will happily furnish information on the American branch of the family. My wife and I will be traveling in the UK later this year and would love to connect with family in Oxford.

Hello. Good to hear from you! If I remember correctly, Charner and Amos are both mentioned in their father's will.

This is what I know about Amos Humphries, brother of Charner Humphries of Whitehall.
5.53 Amos Humphries m. Sarah Hughs d. of William Hughes. Children:
6.190 John W. G. Humphries m. 1) Unknown Greer, 2) unknown Connor
6.191 Martha (Patsy) Humphries m. 1) Unknown Wilson, brother of her sister
Elizabeth Caroline’s husband; 2)Thomas Lovorn
6.192 Elizabeth Caroline Humphries m. Bobbie Wilson, brother of Martha’s first
Husband
6.193 Amos T. Humphries m. Nancy Gentry
6.194 Thomas Jefferson Humphries m. Mary Knowles
I have been working on a 5-generation history of this Humphries family for several years. So I would be very interested in knowing more about Amos and his children. Anything you have on him and/or his children would be welcome, especially sources for records. The above is about all I know about Amos besides what anyone can find on the internet. You can write back to me off the bulletin board at orangetree83@aol.com. Thanks. Charlene
I have 4 Charner Humphries in my family tree.

Charner Humphries (1795-1855), son of John Humphries and Elizabeth Timms, who married Mary Darby and was the infamous Charner Humphries of White Hall. Charner and Mary were both born in Chester District, South Carolina, and died in Atlanta, Georgia. [my 3rd great grand uncle]

Charner Humphries, Jr, (c. 1828-13 December 1855), son of Charner Humphries and Mary Darby, was born in Chester District, South Carolina, and died in Atlanta, Georgia. [my 1st cousin, 4x removed)

Charner Humphries (c. 1862-1901), son of Thomas Jefferson Humphries and Mary E. Knowles, was born and died in Mississippi. [my 2nd cousin, 3x removed]

There was definitely a Charner Humphries living in Union Co. up to 1838, who was married to Charlotte “Lottie” Humphries (1806-1892), but he is not the son of John and Elizabeth Timms Humphries. It has not been possible to identify his parentage to date. He may be a son of Richard Humphries, brother of Charlotte's father, Charles Humphries. Richard lived in Union County, South Carolina, up to 1817. If this Charner is Richard's son, he would be both a first cousin of his wife Charlotte and the Charner Humphries who went to Georgia. In any case, this Charner Humphries married Charlotte “Lottie” Humphries and had at least two children: Elizabeth Jane Humphries, b. 6 June 1829, and Mary Ann Humphries, b. 19 January 1831. Both of these children were born in Union County, South Carolina. [Lottie Humphries Humphries was my 1st cousin, 5x removed].

I am working on my Humphries line -- an effort started by Grandpapa Humphries

Demaris Guest Humphries Miller
demaris@demarismiller.com
My grandfather was William Shade Humphries. He married Margaret Sophronia Lee. They called him Shade. The date of birth is about right. My mother was France's Donella Humphriesr, born in 1909. I suspect we are cousins.

Dot,
I am doing research at the Salt Lake City History Center. I can't find info on G'daddy's parents.
Dad wrote in his account of the family history that Charlie Perry Humphries was raised by his aunt and uncle because his parents were killed in a storm tornado when he was a young boy and his brother Walter was younger. I think James and Lizzie were not his parents. I've found others, Charles Humphries and Fannie. I am confused. Do you have any proof of James and Lizzie?

Sherry Humphries Morris

Martin Fisher (Wanaka) husband of Jane Crownshaw may be related to the Humphries N.Z. Martin's great grandmother was Edith Deborah Humphries - her father was John Humphries, Kidderminster carpet manufacturer. Her mother was Mary Anne Giles. She died when Edith was young and her father remarried. There was also a son, Frederick Humphries.
This may or may not be of help..... a distant cousin of mine has an Humphries Genealogy site on the web that tracks some of the lineage of John & Agnes Humphries circa 1596 from England. Seems they initially landed or settled in Henrico County, VA, (mid-1600's) then moved west. Most of the detailed lineage pertains to Humphries' who settled in Alleghany County, Va near the WV border. May be of some help.
The website is : http://www.richpatch-humphries.com/home
