Information About the first Human In South Africa

Posted: 8 May 2010 2:26PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Human
All I have for him is:

Johann HUMANN or Jan HUMAN
Born circa 1688?
Arrived from Solingen, Prussia, circa 1703 as a VOC soldier
Served as a soldier until 1705/6, then was a farm labourer at
Vergelegen for Willem Adriaan VAN DER STEL
He became a burgher in 1710
Married in Stellenbosch on 01 or 10 May 1712 to Elizabeth VILLION
(aka Lysbeth Vion/Fion van de Kaap)
She was a freed slave, born circa 1692
He died circa 1758 in (Potberg?, Cape)

There is a VOC soldier contract for him at the Cape Archives dated 1706-1710:
File reference: CJ Vol. 2874 Ref. 112
Jan HOEMAN from Solingen

There is a Free Burgher contract for him at the Cape Archives dated 1716-1717:
File reference: CJ Vol. 2878 Ref. 43
Jan HUMAN van Solingen

Otherwise, you will have to try and locate his death, as well as look
through the church records (Cape Town and Stellenbosch probably) and
the VOC monsterrolle for any mention of him. Another option is to
search in VOC archives in the Netherlands and Cape Archives.
