There are lots and lots of HULMES in the Manchester area. Many streets, schools etc. are named for a Hulme.

I am uncertain of the birthplace of John Hulme, I do know he joined the Masons in Duckinfield, but the record states his address was Ashton-under-Lyne. He was born in 1865. He married Alice MARSH who was born in Dukinfield. They lived in Ashton-under-Lyne where their children were born. John is said to have had a brother Edward who had something to do with the clergy. The brother did not come the US.
