Surnames: Hukins, Hunter, Rutledge
I have more anecdotal info than I have documented data. My paternal grandmother's first husband was Livingston Pankston (?) Hukins. I guess she would be your grt.grt. grandmother. Her name was Margaret Elizabeth Hunter, called Lizzie, and was born in Arkansas. Family talk indicates she was a teacher before marriage. She was living in Houston, Texas,in the home of her brother, a blacksmith, when she and Livingston were married December 25, circa 1896. Incidentally, I found a family of Hukins in Kentucky in the 1800s who were blacksmiths and I wonder if Livingston was related and a blacksmith also. Someone said he was living on Turkey Ranch near Houston. The first child of Lizzie and Livingston, a girl, died the same year that Livingston died. I've often wondered if they both had the same ailment. Your great grandfather Earnest was born the year his father died and Lizzie took him and went to live with her brothers in Houston. How she met Dudley Rutledge (my grandfather) I don't know, but it was probably bad luck. She married him and he took her to live in Louisiana where he was from. He and she had 5 or 6 children, one of which died young. I've been told he abandoned her and the children because he allegedly had a vision from God telling him to go west and preach to the Indians. She and the children loaded up a horse-drawn wagon and headed to California around 1924 or 1927 (the records are contradictive.)Lizzie died near Santa Rosa, NM, supposedly from asthma, but I've wondered if it was really TB. She was buried in an unmarked pauper's grave in Santa Rosa. About 4 years ago I and another of her granddaughters put a marker on Lizzie's grave. I never knew Lizzie, of course, because I wasn't born until later, and I never knew any of the ,Rutledges. only the other granddaughter. She was born in Hobbs, NM, and lives now in Las Cruces, NM. When she was a little girl, she and her family would visit Earnest and Celia. She never knew the real relationship of these people until I showed her my genealogy records. I wish I could tell you more about Livingston; I've searched the records for him to no avail. About 5 or 6 years ago I wrote to Michael Hukins in Bunkie, LA, but he didn't seem to have any new information. Do you know where Livingston is buried? If you need exact dates, I have some but will have to dig them out of storage. Hope I've helped you a little.
