are people of same surname NG but different dialects, namely hokkien & henghua, from the same ancestors?

Reply: Not all but many are. If you look at the map of the "Migration Routes of the Huang Clan in Fujian and Guangdong", you will see the relationships of the different branches of the Huang Clans of different regions in these provinces. Many are of the same branch.

(Note: The map ONLY shows the Migration Routes of the 4 most well-known Huang branches)

also, can an NG person marry a female friend, who is an NG too?

Reply: Chinese traditionally avoided/prohibited endogamy (that is marriage within the same surname Clan/lineage) because of the myth that all people with the same surname came from the same ancestor, and therefore people marrying within the same surname group were seen as commiting "incest".

But time has changed now. When I was in China at the end of last year, I was very surprised to see that endogamy is very common there, even in the conservative rural regions. Many in the rural regions have married their own distant relatives (from the same lineage in the same village)!

Endogamy is permissible as long as the couples are "not closely" related and they must not come within the "five degree" (五服-wufu) of relations.
