Thought I'd pen a quick note to congratulate Eric and others on this Huang board for the interesting and valuable work described herein.

I'm a third generation Canadian whose family has been in Canada for about a hundred years. I recently returned from a visit to China, that included a first time sojourn to my ancestral village located in Kai Ping county, an hour and a half drive from Guangzhou. The purpose of my trip was to celebrate the 20 year sister Cities' Anniversary of Vancouver and Guangzhou.

I've posted a few pix of my visit, along with a short dissertation on my family's history in Canada...it's posted on my office website at http://e-atelier.com/ea_China.html (follow the links). I hope to hear from other people, especially other Chinese Canadians and their experiences back to their ancestral villages.

Unfortunately, I cannot read Chinese, but if anyone knows of the origins of my ancestral village, and my ancestors, I'd be grateful to learn. I hope to share this information with other relations here and to eventually hook up with the Wong Clan association here in Vancouver.

Hello David,

I saw your message in my guestbook.

Your family's achievements in Canada is impressive. Well, my family has been in Brunei for 67 years but most of our family members are still "Stateless". My eldest cousin and I are the only two Bruneian citizens in the family. I only got my citizenship four years ago. Hopefully, our family fortune will change in the future :p

If you look at the map of Huang migration in South China at the link below you will see that Gangzhou Branch (descendants of Huang Tao 黄滔 840-911) of the Huang Clan had established themselves around the Pearl River Delta, including Kaiping.

However, your family may belong to other branch of the Huang Clan due to the fact that there had been constant movements of people over the past one thousand years.

To be sure, you need to contact your relatives in China and try to get a copy of your Clan Genealogy. You can scan it to me or post me a photocopy so I can help you confirm which of the four main Huang branches do you belong to. I have helped several clansmen this way but there are some which I couldn't confirm.

Regards,

Erik

Hi Erik,

Thanks for your email and for the info. The migration map is great...only problem for me is that I can't read Chinese.

Is there a version of it in English? If not, I will have it translated (in pin yin and in "English" phoneticized Cantonese ) and make it available to all as soon as it is completed.

The Vancouver Public Library together with the Chinese Canadian Historical Society of British Columbia, Canada recently presented a full day seminar on Chinese Genealogy. They will have some info on their website on this soon (please be patient as it is all run by volunteers) ; their website is: http://www.cchsbc.ca/

I've traced my family back 10 generations, and the 10th ancestral name I have (the only recorded name) is "Jett Seung Doo" (in Cantonese). This was the name of my ancestor in the early to mid 1700's according to my late father.

When I visited my hastily arranged trip to my ancestral village, I tried to get some ancestral information, but my relation said all this was destroyed during the cultural revolution. I am sure if I had time to go back and search more diligently, I may be able to uncover a lot more info. I hope to return soon.

Here's another website I find quite interesting on Chinese Genealogy:

Keep in touch!

Hi David,

No, I don't have a version of the map with place names in Pinyin. It will be great if you can translate the place names in Pinyin. Send me a copy once you have finished and I will put a link to it on the Chinese map.

The Cultural Revolution had done a lot of damage to our history and culture. When I was on my Root-searching trip in China, many old clansmen told me that they had witnessed the burning of Clan genealogies (which clansmen had meticulously updated and copied over the centuries) and the destruction of ancestral spiritual tablets and altar in the Clan temples. The Clan temples were all converted to village schools and other uses! But thanks to some courageous clansmen, who hid our genealogies (one was a hand-written copy dated 1565 from the Ming dynasty) from the Red Guards, we are able to trace our roots today. Records for 9 generations of my family line were destroyed in the Revolution! But many Chinese families are not that lucky as all their genealogical records were completely destroyed and they are unable to trace their lineage today.

Hi Erik,

I am writing to you for permission to link to your website (Huang /Ng Genealogy at http://www.geocities.com/bx_huang/ ). I've been cobbling together a personal website in the little free time that I have... but it's keeping me sane and out of trouble :-)

I've temporarily created the links so that you may see where they occur
http://www.generasian.ca/links.html at the "Wong" Chinese character.

I hope this is okay with you... .

Thank you in advance for your consideration, and look forward to exchanging more ideas and sharing info.

Regards,
David Wong, Canada

Hi David,

You are most welcome!

Making a website is a real headache. It requires a lot of time and creativity. You are doing very well with yours.

I always could not find time to update mine. When I update my links in the future, I will create a link to your website.

Regards,

Erik Huang
