Thank you so much for your reply! I am actually not related to the family, but have a interesting connection to Josephine. (Born 1885) I was hoping to find out more about her.
I have located copies of the 1895 and 1900 census. On the 1895 census, the surname is spelled Hromadka. On the 1900 census, it is spelled Hromadko.
On the 1895 census, Frank (estimated birth year 1851) and Josephine (estimated birth year 1855) appear to be husband and wife. There are 5 children listed:
Wencel (estimated birth year 1881)
Josephine (estimated birth year 1885)
Amelia (estimated birth year 1888)
Frank (estimated birth year 1891)
Joseph (estimated birth year 1895)
The 1900 census lists Josephine as the head of the household and Frank is not listed. (I assume he died sometime between 1895 and 1900.) Only 4 of the children are listed:
Wincel [sic]
Emma (nickname for Amelia?)
Frank
Joseph
Josephine (born 1885) is not listed. She was actually living with my Great-Great Grandparents, John (Jr.) and Annie Oliva in Hutchinson township when the 1900 census was completed. She was 15 at the time and was listed as a servant. In speaking with my Grandfather about this information, he told me that he had no idea that his Grandparents ever had any servants. (In addition to Josephine, they also had a widowed farm laborer by the name of Joseph Pesava living with them in 1900.) I can only assume that Josephine served as a sort of governess for my Great Grandfather and his younger sister. They were 8 and 5 years old at the time. The census indicates that Josephine was able to read, write and speak English.
I found the census on familysearch.org. (It's a free site, but I believe you have to create an account to view the actual document.) I can send you direct links for each (1895, 1900) if you'd like.
Thanks!
