I am trying to trace ancestors of my mother--Edit Ilona Hrabovszky Hall--born 13 April 1925 in Hungary--I believe in Bekescsaba. Her father was Mihaly Hrabovszky born around 1895-1900 in Hungary and died about 1944. Her mother was Judit Ilona Czibulski Hrabovszky born around 1900 in Hungary (?) and died 31 December 1979 in Budapest, Hungary. I believe that the family had homes in both Bekescsaba and Budapest (I think Pest). Mihaly was an officer in the Hungarian army during WWI, was an artist, teacher, and philanthropist. I believe he had many brothers and one sister (Mariska) and was either the youngest or second to the youngest child in that family. Judit had at least one sister who did not marry. The Hrabovszky family and/or the Czbulski family owned vineyards in what was formerly Czechoslovakia. The Hrabovszky (and/or Czibula) family was strongly Lutheran and was instrumental in developing/expanding the Lutheran religion in Hungary. I have heard of a Hrabovszky connection to a Spanish 'blue-blood' family. This would likely have been Mihaly Hrabovszky's mother or grandmother. I would really appreciate any information on the Hrabovszkys--especially from descendants of the brothers and sister(s) of Mihaly who know more of the family tree.

Do you have any documentation to confirm Bekescsaba as a place of birth?

To me HRABOVSZKY and CZIBULA seem Slavic.

I am pretty sure that my mother, Edit Ilona Hrabovszky and her sister, Hilda Judit? Hrabovszky were born in Bekescaba. I know that the family lived in both Bedescaba and Budapest in the 1920's until WWII. Mihaly Hrabovszky died in about 1944. Edit, Hilda, and Judit (and perhaps other family members) were in the Spital am Pirn D.P. Camp in Austria at the end of the war. Edit never went back to Hungary--not sure about Hilda. Judit did return and I believe spent the remainder of her life in Bekescsaba. (I actually found a mail receipt with the address this weekend, but haven't had time to do anything with it yet!) I do know that there were many relatives in what was then Czecheslovakia--not sure if they were Hrabovszky or Czibula or both. There was definitely a strong Slavic tie, but my mother was "adamant" about being "Hungarian"! I know that she spoke a Slavic dialect in addition to Hungarian at (her) home. It is my understanding that my mother's family (I believe the Hrabovszky family) was instrumental in building the great (?) Lutheran church which until yesterday I thought was in Budapest, but learned from some old postcards is actually in Bekescsaba. My mother also told me that her family owned art which is/was displayed in the Hungarian National Gallery and at the time of the war, my grandfather (Mihaly) apparently had at least three works of art hanging there. The Mother's family also owned historical relics displayed in a/some museums in Hungary.

Thank you so much for all of your help!! I had been unable to find anything on my mother's family and since I do not speak Hungarian, I can't understand much from the few Hungarian records I have been able to access. I do speak and read some German so if you find anything written in German, please forward that information as well.

I think I may be related to a Janos Hrabovszky (ancestor), but the information I have come across that refers to him is written in Hungarian and I can not read it. I also may be related to a Johann Hrabovszky, as well as Josef, Nikalaus and Stefan. I am guessing this because of finding the Hrabovszky family crest and a brief description (written in German) on line. I could translate some of the description, but there was not enough information for me to know if I have a direct tie to these individuals.

Again, I really do appreciate the help you have provided!

You're welcome.

Do consider ordering Bekescsaba's church records just to see if you find HRABOVSZKY surnamen there.
Nothing complicated going thru the church records. Take a look in www.bmi.net/jjaso for church header wording. The only thing you have to fear is the priest's handwriting.
Having a Slavic surname does not make one automatically Slavic.
If you do have some old addresses, please attach a scan of it and post it on the board. Maybe I can make heads and tails out of the old address and can proceed further with the address.

Thank you for the additional information. I apologize for taking so long to respond to your last post. This is a very busy time of the year for me at work. I did find a Bekescaba address that was good at least until 1979 when my grandmother died. I am presently at a conference and do not have it with me on this computer, but will post it for you when I get a chance. It may be up to a few weeks, however, as I will have very little time until about mid June. Hopefully at that time I will be able to pursue this more! You have been very helpful and I greatly appreciate it!
