Resources - Census and Other

Some of you may not know of certain resources I have found helpful. The LDS website, www.familysearch.org now has a searchable index to the 1880 US Census. There were only 33 adults with the name Hrabak (or a variation) in that census. They were in the states IA, MO, KS, PA. So if you are looking for a child or his parents, it's only a small sample to look thru.

Many states also have a mid-decade census, for example in 1885. The Iowa one is excellent. I paid a genealogist a small fee to do look-ups, and I found some excellent leads. You can locate genealogists from and in magazines.

The local historical societies and state libraries are also excellent resources for newspapers, city directories, etc. The Tama County Historical Society in Iowa was very helpful in providing obituaries. Again, it costs a small fee, and you have to write them with an explicit request.

The 6-volume book, "Czech Immigration Passenger Lists" by Baca may be helpful to some, but I haven't been lucky. It's likely to be found only at major genealogical libraries, or the Library of Congress.

There is also a web site with lots of links helpful to genealogists : www.iarelative.com . It used to have a page of translations of Czech names to English, however, the link wasn't working for me. For example, you might find that Vencil or Vaclav frequently became James in the USA.

Hope these ideas help.
