I have noticed several Hrabaks in the Ohio & Pennsylvania areas. Have no idea how they fit into the scheme as far as my history goes. All I know for sure is only as far back as my great-grandparents. He was a carpenter and had a lumber yard. Eventually he became an undertaker (of which I am the 4th generation). Where they had come from originally, I have no idea. I am located in Belle Plaine, IA - about 35 miles west of Cedar Rapids.

MY great grand mother was Mary Hrabak. Sometimes later spelled Robach. She came from Bohemia and maried Frank Swinker (unclear if name was spelled like that at the time). It was the second marriage for both. It is not clear whether Mary's first mariage was here or in old country. She had a bad leg from a haywagon running over it in old country---may have lost it then or later from diabetes. My grandfather James V Swinker was born in 1887 in Trotter PA outside Connellville. Mary died in 1918. She had 2 other children. Her daughter Rose married a Kantorek (ik). Rose had a daughter Gladys Kadylak who lives in Mt Pleasant.

Oddly enough my paternal grandparents are from the eastern part of the Cleveeland area, and have family that are undertakers, my biological father would help one of his uncles in this field. Lorene

HI, Do you know anything about the great grand parents on the Hrabak side?

MY GGF Mary/ Marie had a brother John, who also came from Bohemia to the Connellsville area. Mayhave been others. Her brothers came first to work on the mines/ coke ovens, sent for her to marry a widower, my GGF Frank Cervenka in 1886,killed in a mine accident in 1891 after 3 children with her. My GF James --4 years old --was sent to the brothers house to get help when she heard the news. Supposedly one lived in Morrel and the other in Trotter. John had John b.1903 and Ella b.1895. Familiar to you?

Hi - I have a distant connection with Iowa Hrabak's. I'm going to list some standard sources that may help narrow in on your grandfather.
1. The 1930 Census on Ancestry is searchable on names. There is an Estella M. Hrabak born in 1901, living in Belle Plaine IA, with a son born in 1925, but the son's name is indeciperable, but middle initial B.
2. If you know your GF's death date, his death certificate should give his birth date and place, and might give parents names.
3. Check the SSDI. Ancestry has a version, as do other online genealogy sites. If found, then you could request a Social security application, which should have parent's names.

Your GF's name may not have been Bruce originally, as people may have Anglicized an old-country name.

I'll also send you privately, the names of some people who have large family databases with some Hrabaks in them.
