I am not sure if we are related or not. there was talk that grandma Olive had a daughter. If she did then she died or something happened because we only knew of my Daddy, Donald Philip and Uncle, Albert Franklin Arnold.

By all indication of records I have seen so far Grandma Olive's mother was Dara, not Dora. Certainly this can be explained though because lower case a and o can sometimes be misinterpreted in hand writing.

Please feel free to check out our families trees and make sure we have the same information. I would be interested in having help with this tree limb.

Thank you for your reply
Jesus Bless you,
Eugenia Rodgers,
Rita's mom.
Dara AYERS (1868 - 1937) married George P HOUSEL (1866). They had a daughter and named her Olive Anne (1894 - 1945). Olive Anne was born in NJ. Olive Anne HOUSLE married Frank ARNOLD (1888)in Canada best I can figure. Frank and Olive Anne had a son and named him Donald Philip (4Mar1923 - 25Mar1987). The little family moved from London Ontario, Canada to California. Donald Philip Arnold married Ruby BLASSMAN (6Apr1929 - 6Feb2009). I'd appreciate any help with this tree. Thank you.

Hi Kaye. Thank you for your prompt reply. I have located you in the "blue" book. I presume you do not live in the Rochester area. In fact I bet very few of the Housel descendents live here now. Would love to hear more about and from you.

Were you able to contact Everett Whitbeck? I met him when I visited his Aunt Olive (author of this wonderful "blue" book) in San Luis Obispo many years ago. He was trying to continue his aunt's work into the origin of the Housels. I would much appreciate learning whatever is now known.

Again, many thanks for your reply and I hope to hear more from you.

By the way--I am in the Charles Edward line and still reside in Rochester.

Jean Shafer

Unfortunately, I think we are dealing with different families. "Aunt" Olive did a Housel family history starting with Abraham and Easter who moved to the Niagara area of NY around 1834. One of their sons was Wm. Smith Housel. He had 3 wives and 13 children. One of his daughters had a daughter, Olive Whitbeck Fuller, who compiled the history. There was a son named George Lawrence Housel, but there were no Roberts in the family.
Thanks for your message--nice to know someone read mine and good luck in your search.

I've also looked for information on Decatur. There is a tombstone in the family plot for him at Union Township Memorial Cemetery (Brookside Cemetery), Westchester, OH. However, the cemetery was not established until well after his death. He was either reburied, or this is just a memorial marker. Please let me know if you find any additional information, including confirmation of the possibility of his name also being Charles. The only mention of a possible Housel in the area records is a stagecoach driver, who might have been his father.
Your likely OK, based on what I have. Hauschildt,Housel,Houshell,Hauchildt, may be variations of the same surname. See the attached.

I was looking at some old e-mails and adding a little to my geneology notes. I was thinking I had a note from our cousin Phyllis Smith that your mother had moved to somewhere in Iowa. Is she she still there? I used to visit and stay our at Kenny & Edna's farm when I was younger. What is the news on your aunt Marilyn, is she still in St. Louis?
I think we may have met at Kenny & Edna's 75th anniversary party. I was just in Madison this week for a funeral of my mother's older sister Evelyn. My mother, Loretta, is only sibling left from her family of 10 and is in a nursing home. She is 93

Re: Father of Matthias Housel

Remember that Mathias, his siblings and cousins lived through the Revolution. The Hessian Soldiers (German mercenaries hired by the British) were used in America to suppress the colonists. As a result, anyone with a German sounding name was under suspicion. As a result, the Germans who were not a part of the Hessians (and even some who were, but preferred to stay in America), changed their German names to something that was a little more Americanized. Hauschildt, usually to Housel. Oberholtzer eventually to Overholt or other variations. Other ethnic minorities also changed their names to fit in better with the local population.

So with this in mind, I too would like to be walked through the proof that leads from Kasper Hauschildt, through Jacob, and on to Matthias Housel and his siblings.

Could you bring me up to date with findings as to when and where the Housels came from--and any data on Esther Smith? Was her name not thought to be Daus before?

Kathy, I have never met you but come from Rochester. Was Frank your grandfather? Do you have a brother who is a doctor?
To add my two cents worth regarding the ancestors of Seymour B. HOUSEL~

The information posted on this forum in the last couple of days by Lester HOUSEL and FamilyHart is correct. In fact, I could not have written it better myself.

HOWEVER, the material that FamilyHart refers the reader to on their website is, in my opinion, NOT correct. They have confused two Joshua HOUSELs.

The Joshua HOUSEL that died in Union Co., PA was born about 1771 in Essex Co., NJ. He had located in the area aound Lewisburg, PA by 1800 and lived there continuously until his death on 17 Sep 1852. He and his wife, Charity HAGAMAN did have a son named Abraham. However, this son, born about 1797 moved with his parents to Union Co., where he died about 4 Mar 1834. This is evidenced by filings in his estate that were filed on that date. He appears in the 1830 census of West Buffalo Twp., Union Co. in 1830.

The Abraham HOUSEL that was the father of Seymour was still residing in Bethlehem Twp, Hunterdon Co., NJ as of 18 Feb 1817. By the census of 1820 he had moved to the Seneca Lake area of NY. They appear in the 1830 census of Lansing, Tompkins Co., NY. In the 1840 census they appear in Niagara Co., NY and in 1855 they are in Ridgeway, Orleans Co., NY. They are further documented in enumerations of 1860, 1863 and 1865, before Abraham died on 17 Jul 1868.

==============
WHITES CORNERS CEMETERY
Harrison Twp.
The cemetery in Whites Corners was incorporated in 1870 on land originally owned by Miles White
the second sheriff in Potter County. Application was made to the Court in September 1870
by William J. Latta, James Ladd and others for a charter to incoroprate the White's Corners Association in Harrison Township
HOUSEL Seymour born 3-25-1829 died 3-2-1913
>================note from John H Ramer 9 29 2007
Greetings Cousins All,

Another small advance, methinks.

Received today the death certificate of Seymour B. HOUSEL, b. 25 Mar 1829, NY; d. 2 Mar 1913, Harrison Twp., Potter Co., PA; bur. Whites Corners Cemetery, Harrison Twp., Potter Co., PA.

I will provide a complete "dump" of what I have on this man at the end, but the news today is the death certificate does have his parents noted. I should note that the informanant for the death certificate was Mary (nee HOUSEL) ENGLISH, his daughter.

Seymour's father is clearly noted as Abraham HOUSEL, b. NJ and his mother is equally clearly noted as Elsa SMITH, also b. NJ.

Yes, it says Elsa and not Esther! Despite this, I am comfortable that Seymour B. HOUSEL IS a son of Abraham HOUSEL and Esther SMITH.

Seymour's birth date does raise an interesting question, however. In the 19 Sept 1850 census, we have Seymour as resident in Yates Twp., Orleans Co., NY, age 20, living with a John and Phebe PHELPS.

Meanwhile in the 30 Aug 1850 census, in the household of Abraham and Esther HOUSEL, in Andover Twp., Allegany Co., NY, a Leincon HOUSEL, age 21 appears.

First, is the thought of whether Seymour might be the same person as Leincon. Given their nearly similtaneous census appearances, I would be hard pressed to argue that they were.

Therefore, I would posit that they were probably both sons of Abraham and Esther. Given that we have already known of sons William Smith, Matthew, and Alexander, this would mean that we have identified 5 sons for this couple. Again, from our analysis of the 1830 and 1840 census records we believe that they had a total of six sons.
Re: Hannah Housel, Union Co. PA

We believe that the Hannah HOUSEL (b. 2 Apr 1822, Union Co., PA; d. 7 Sep 1899; bur. Lewisburg Cemetery, Lewisburg, Union Co., PA), who marr. William H. NESBIT and was the mother of Alvin A. NESBIT, was the daughter of "Captain" William D. HOUSEL, (b. Abt 1790; d. 7 Jun 1850; bur. Lewisburg Cemetery, Lewisburg, PA) and his wife Mary (nee UNKNOWN).

"Captain" HOUSEL, the son of Jacob (b. 16 Mar 1770) fought in the War of 1812 as noted in the following:

!VETERAN, DEATH, BURIAL
Source: Obit of Capt. William HOUSEL, "Lewisburg Chronicle", 12 June 1850, pg 2.
>
" William HOUSEL
Died in Lewisburg, Union Co., 7 June, Capt. William HOUSEL, in his 61st year.
Capt. HOUSEL served five years in the Regular Army of the U.S., part of the time as a private and part as orderly serjeant, and as in active service on the Canada frontier during the whole of the last war with Great Britain. He was taken prisoner in Dec. 1813, together with a small detachment of Americans, and marched to Quebec - suffering much hardship on the road and treated with much brutality. He rejoined his regiment in the succeeding month of June - participated in the bloody battles of Chippewa and Bridgewater (or Lundy's Lane) - and was in Ft. Erie when its magazine exploded during an assault from a storming party of he enemy. At Lundy's Lane, his company was the first in the field, and his comrades mowed down by platoons: yet he passed through the war without receiving a serious wound, and returned to die at he home of his youth.
In 1843, he attended the Volunteer Encampment at Danville to meet his old commander, Gen. SCOTT, who recognized, and gave him a most cordial greeting.
Capt. HOUSEL was a devoted husband and father, a kind neighbor, a brave and unflinching soldier, possessed of more than an ordinary share of military spirit and enthusiasm - but modest and reserved in referring to the incidents of his own military experience, which circumstances will account for the meagerness of this sketch. As his body wasted by disease, his thoughts were turned upon the future state, and he hoped to enjoy it through the Savior's merits.
His remains were borne by the Lewisburg Infantry and the Cameron Guards, followed by a large concourse of citizens, to the Lewisburg Cemetery, where he was interred, on a Saturday afternoon last."
----
Notes:
1.	The "Gen. SCOTT" referred to was, at the time, Brigadier General Winfield SCOTT, commanding officer of the 1st Brigade at the Battle of Lundy's Lane. The 1st Brigade was composed of: the 9th, 11th, 22nd, and 25th Infantry Regiments. General SCOTT, in 1841, became the supreme commander of the US Army.
2.	Fort Erie was captured by forces under the command of General Scott on 3 July 1814.
3.	The Battle of Chippewa occurred on 5 July 1814. To this day, the cadets at the US Military Academy at West Point wear grey uniforms in honor of the grey uniforms worn by the US Army at the Battle of Chippewa.
4.	The battle at Lundy's Lane occurred on 25 July 1814.
5.	Tombstone inscriptions in the Lewisburg Cemetery note that Mary HOUSEL, d. 14 Dec. 1868, was the wife and widow, of Capt. William HOUSEL, d. 7 June 1850, 60 yrs.

!VETERAN, DEATH:
Source:   American Biographical Library;   The Biographical Cyclopædia of American Women;  Volume II;  American Biographical Notes;
H; The Chicago Historical Society; page 212
>
HOUSEL, CAPT.
