Hi Carol!
How wonderful to hear from you. I know that my Grandma spoke warmly of Regis as well. She really enjoyed their annual get togethers (I think it was on Saint Patty's day each year!). It is likely that the Gannon was Dorothy Gannon, my Grandmother's sister. Aunt Dorothy was a sweetheart and we were all very fond of her. She lived here in Georgia with us for the last few years and passed away a few years ago.

I'd love to chat more. Can you contact me directly at tisa.pardee@gmail.com? I'd love to add your family to my tree and share what I have!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Tisa
Hi Theresa -- my sister-in-law just sent me a copy of your posting of July 30. I am one of Regis' daughters living in Ohio. I recall Dad talking fondly of your grandmother, Mary Veronica. I do recall a Gannon, however, I don't remember the first name. Dad corresponded with a Gannon and Mary Veronica. I'll go through some of dad's things and see if I can come up with a first name. Would love to hear from you.

Carol

Hi, Steve,
OMG!! We are after the same connection with the Samuel R. Hough. Boy, it would be wonderful if we could help each other with this.

Hugo Ha(o)rterson Hough is my great-grandfather. I have several photos of him and all his children and other family members I could share with you. His daughter, Lillie Pearl Hough, was my grandmother. She married Samuel Griffin Finklea, and they raised their family in Hull, TX, where I also grew up.

I remember my grandparents talking about "them Purswells." But I can't remember in what context. I think that was another family in Montgomery County that they were friends with. From your information, it looks like Isobelle Diar Hough married a Purswell. That would make sense.

From Hugo's death certificate, it says his daddy was Samuel R. Hough, born in N.C., but I think that is wrong. I think it is really S.C., where Charlotte Hornsby was supposedly born. But so far I haven't found him there.

If Dr. Hough was on the Handbook of Texas online, he is no longer there. I just searched for him there and there is no mention except to say that an "S." Hough was elected as the first mayor of Woodville. He lived in Woodville so I'm assuming that was him.

I found that Dr. Samuel Hough is listed in the 1870 census of Woodville in Tyler County Texas. He's 81 years old, living with M. E. Hough. His occupation is listed as Physician. If Indians killed him, it must have been after that. I'm interested in obtaining more info on him. I'm trying to find out if he is the father of Samuel Hough born around 1816 that married Charlotte Hornsby.

I'm also researching Dr. Samuel H. Hough.
I'm trying to find out if he may have been the father of Samuel R. Hough that married Charlotte Hornsby.

My ultimate goal is to tie either or both of these Samuels, to my Hough line. Samuel R's son Hugo Horterson Hough (spelling from his death certificate) lived only a couple of houses away from my great grandmother, Isobelle Diar Hough Purswell, in the late 1800's. She was the daughter of Alson Hough who was the son of Frances and Unity Hough. She is buried in the same cemetery (Morgan) as Samuel and Charlote and their son Hugo and Hugo's son and grandson.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Steve Moody

Re: Wm. J.Hough b 1807-09 Eng,m abt 1832 in Canada to Diana/Dinah(?) ,migrated to Illinois, then Iowa

I have just recently started researching on this family line, my husband’s great great grandpa is William Hough the son of William and Dinah. Maybe you already have some of this information, since you posted your message on Ancestry, but here is all the information I have, mainly from census records. It has been so fun researching the family!

Children of William and Dinah:

Edward, b. 1833 Have not been able to find anything on Edward

Henry, b. 1835 m. Catherine, born in Canada. This was found on a NY 1880 Census. They are 47 and 39 years old, but I have not been able to confirm if this is the correct Henry, and also, this Henry and Catherine, I have not been able to confirm or find any children.

Albert, b. 1842, Quebec Canada and married Arletta b. 1853 in Indiana. They had the following children:
1. William H. Hough b. 1871 Kansas, m. Gertrude. But also, have not been able to confirm if this is correct. On the 1920 Butler, KS Census I find them at ages 38 and 34, no children. On the 1920 Butler, KS census, ages 48 and 44, no children. Have not been able to find them on any census with children, again not sure if this is the correct William H and wife.
2. Sarah E. Hough b. 1873 Kansas
3. John O. Hough b. August 1875, Iowa, m. Nelia Tabilth (not sure if this is her maiden name or middle name) b. 1875, Iowa. John and Nelia had one daughter: Elva Laura Hough Beard, born 9 March 1909, NM and died 17 October 1975 in Wilmer, Dallas, TX. I found Elva’s death certificate online.
4. Cora P. Hough b. December 1878, Minnesota
On 1920 Census for Oklahoma, I found that Albert came to the United states in 1845. On this census Albert is 76 and Arletta is 66. (My sister found somewhere that Arletta’s maiden name might be Dunnak, be we have found nothing to confirm this.)
5. Charlotte, b. January 1884, Montana
6. Vela O (daughter) b. September 1897

Martha, m. Hadley Briggs, b. 1824 in England. Martha died 14 March 1916 and Hadley died 28 November 1903, according to the Orchard Cemetery, Mitchell County, Iowa, where they are buried. He and Martha had the following children:
1. Robert Allen. Briggs b. 1864, Iowa, found him on a 1900 Iowa Census, age 36, single. Found him on a 1920 Iowa Census, age 55, single, listed at the Iowa Hospital for the Insane : ( I found him listed at the Orchard Cemetery, Mitchell County, Iowa with his parents and brother, but it says his death date was 1916, which could not be right, when he was found on the 1920 census at that hospital.)
2. Charles Henry Briggs b. 1866 and d. 22 December 1939, Orchard Cemetery, Mitchell County, Iowa. On the 1900 Iowa census, Charles was 34 and single. I have not been able to find anything else.

Charlotte, m. Warren Dykeman, b. 1817 or 1818 in New York, found on 1870 US Census, Floyd, Iowa and 1880 census, Rudd, Floyd, Iowa. On the 1880 census, Charlotte is 34 and widowed.
Charlotte and Warren’s children are:
1. Loren M. b. November 1865, Iowa, married Bertha Ann, b. July 1873, Wisconsin, they had a daughter Verna M. born June 1898, Iowa (as per 1900 census)
2. Plynn W. b. December 1868, Iowa

Jeremiah (cannot find any information)

John (cannot find any information)

William: (my husband’s great great grandpa) b. June 1854, Illinois
Married Sarah Elizabeth West b. 1865, and they had the following children as per the 1900 census, Rudd, Floyd, Iowa:
Guy Hough b. July 1883, Minnesota, d. 20 November 1908, Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd, IA
Rozila C. Hough b. April, 1886, Iowa
William A. Hough b. October 1890, Minnesota
Etta D. Hough (This is my husband’s great grandma) b. October 1890 Minnesota (twin to William)
Olive L Hough b. July 1898, Iowa
I’m sure my husband’s father has more information on this family, but we have not been able to talk to him lately!

Alonzo b. about 1855 or 1858, Iowa, m. Loretta Irene, b. about 1870, Iowa. Alonzo and Loretta had the following children:
1. Laura Hough b. about 1894, Iowa
2. Mabel Hough b. about 1897, Iowa
3. Maggie Hough b. about 1889, Iowa
4. Maud Hough b. about 1899 Iowa (all of the girl’s information, I found on a 1900 Mitchell County census)
Found online at the Osage City Cemetery, Osage, Mitchell County, Iowa, burial date for Alonzo was 7 August 1928 and burial date for Loretta Irene was 30 October 1918.

Mary Ann (your family) Thank you for all the information you posted for her!

Ellen (cannot find any information)

Albert b. about 1867, married Lulu L., born about 1872, Iowa, found this information on the 1900 Mitchell County census, have not found any children for them

Again, this is all the information I have so far, if you have any further information on this family, please let me know. Monica in Utah : )

Re: Mrs. H.M. Hough (Gertude Minerva/Minnerva Gertrude Hough

I am now replying to my own message. In spite of sloppy handwriting(and haven't we all done that, not realizing that in future years that what we write may be important!) on the death certificate of William H. Price, my husband's grandfather, I have now determined that Mrs. H.M. Hough is Gertrude Minerva/Minerva Gertrude Hough married to George Maudsley Hough. Her maiden name is Price. She is William's sister.

I would like more information about her. She lists her brother's father(and her own father) as John Robert Price born in New York which conflicts with him having been born in Tennessee according to Census information for the family. This New York information appears on her own death certificate for her father. She was born in Kenton, Tennesee which agrees with my records. Her mother, Mary Jane Branch is also born in Tennessee which agrees with my records. Her death certificate is also rather hastily written & her father's name looks like John Prier or Pria.

Gertrude Minerva/Minnerva Gertrude Price Hough was born 3 Mar 1882 in Kenton, Obion, Tennessee and died 1 Feb 1932 in Glenwood, Pope, Minnesota. Her husband, George Hough, seems to have died 4 Aug 1935 in Hennepin, Minnesota. They lived in Wells County, North Dakota for a period of years before returning to Minnesota. He was a depot agent for the railroad. Their son was Lorne Price Hough.

I am interested in hearing from her relatives. I am curious as to the New York origins of her father, John Robert Price. A piece of the puzzle is not fitting. Perhaps "Minnie" as she was called, had information that I do not have and relatives know this information.

I have an old fashioned autograph book that belonged to her brother, William Price, dated Alexandria, Minnesota, 1892. There is an autograph from "your sister, Minnie" that is a nice keepsake. If you are a relative, I would be happy to make you a copy of this speciman of her handwriting.

Thanks for any information that you can provide.

Rita Price

Hi, Sam,
Yes, I'll be happy to make copies of all the documents I have of Dr. Samuel H. Hough and Hanson Hough. The originals are archived in the General Land Office Library here in Austin.

Hanson was a slave owner, you know. He acquired a 13-year-old slave girl it appears after they got to Texas. I'll send you that information, too, if you'd like it.

Unfortunately, for me, I did so much research on Dr. Samuel and Hanson and had them on my generation chart (luckily in pencil)and spent so much time with them in my mind thinking about what their lives must have been to find out recently that they are not the right Houghs. I had a weak link between Hanson and his son, H.H. Hough, and then to my g-grandfather who was Hugo Harterson Hough, Montgomery County. That will teach me to put too much store on weak links. That weak link, as it turns out, is Samuel R. Hough born in South Carolina and his wife Charlotte Hornsby, also born in South Carolina.

Have you ever heard of these Houghs? If so, I would love knowing anything you know about them.

I have a lot of info on Hanson and his wife, Melanie Black. I can make copies of all of it, if you'd like. What's your address?

Glad you wrote and that I can help you with this fascinating info.
gaylon finklea hecker

Judy, A book that may be easier to find is "Families of Ancient New Haven," by Donald Lines Jacobus (Clarence D. Smith, Rome, NY 1923), also reprinted several times by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore. Most decent genelogical libraries will have a copy of one of the printings. Look at both Hough and Hall families.

Bill Hough

Judy, I'm with you (same line) through the William born 1732 (you say 1782, but I am sure you mean 1732.) I show the son's of this William and his wife Mary Hall that bracket your Theron's birth as William (my ancestor) born April 24, 1767, and Samuel, born January 25, 1770. I question whether your Theron was a son of William (1732) and Mary Hall Hough. I don't have a copy of "The Descendants of William Hough of CT", but that book should be consulted to find where Theron fits. William (1732) had several brothers and half-brothers around Wallingford, but I don't have listings of their offspring.

Bill Hough
Laura,

Thanks for replying, I have the date August 25, 1851 as a date for Ephrem son of Casper....so it couldn't be him as the one buried in Salem White cemetery. So I figured maybe John that was passing thru could possibly have had a son named Ephrem, I looked at the census's and John George is the only one that Ephrem would fit. No I haven't been to Salem White Cemetery, someone had sent me these photos awhile back.....I am not sure who is buried around this Ephrem. I will have to relook at the census's again.

jamie
www.senorasimcox.tribalpages.com

Laura,

Then it sounds like it could be under George then, I totally forgot about looking up George's census years...good thing you remembered...and it would fit since George and Margaret were married in February, 9 months from that time would be about December. Since there is no way of proving it by either a death record, would George have a will somewhere you think? I took another look, I bet Ephrem does belong to George since they are both in the same cemetery.....wonder what Ephrem died of so early in age.....I doubt there would be an obit on him being back in that time frame. I think for now, I will list Eprhem under George and Margaret as their kid until something down the line comes about that differently. Thanks for the help! Check out my webpage, I do have some photos of our line of Hough's.
Hello,

I was doing a little work on the Hough line in my tree, which I am a Hough descendant. I found a gravestone in the Salem White Church in Ross county, Ohio. His name is Ephrem Hough born 1828 and died 1842....by looking at census's, the only person that Ephrem fits into to is John George Hough and wife Nancy Hixon family.
Hi Jennifer.
I descend from these McCartan's too and have lots of information. I am trying to build out this family and I would love to share info. My Great-Grandmother, Cecilia McCartan Gannon was the sister of William Henry McCartan.

In addition, my Grandmother, Mary Veronica, just passed away a few weeks ago and I am looking to notify her McCartan cousins. She lived to a ripe old age of 90, so she outlived most of them, but there may still be a few around that knew and loved her. I know she was close to Regis and Genevieve's family.

Would you be willing to share information on your side of the family so I can continue to build it out? I would be more than happy to send you what I have.

Regards

Theresa

I have as the wife of William Hough (you were correct born 1732) Ruth Hawley (not Mary Hall) and their only child was Theron Hough born 13 Feb 1769 in Wallingford and died 28 Sept 1858 in Big Hollow Windham Litchfield Connecticut. His wife was Tryphana Wilcox and they married 22 Jan 1792 in Goshen Litchfield Connecticut. I will see if I can locate "The Descendants of William Hough of CT" to make sense of this. Maybe someone else will see this and add evidence. Judy

Now, I'm trying to prove the relationship.

My searches of Ross County wills/probate/guardianship records and land records has yielded nothing. Same goes for the online obituary database at the Chillicothe Public Library, which has no listings for Casper or his siblings.

If you have documentation of Casper's parentage or of his connection to the other children of Jacob and Louisa, I would greatly appreciate it if you would contact me.

Thanks.

Dear Evon,

I found your entry in Ancestry.com this morning.

We are related. John Hough, son of Patrick and Margaret Meara came to Australia as a convict. He worked at Raymond Terrace and later married the boss’s daughter, Catherine Newton. He became a sizeable landowner at Viney Creek about 40km north of Newcastle and a large part of his land fronted the western shore of Port Stephens.

His son John m Bridget Curry. This John was killed when thrown from his horse in 1881. His wife subsequently remarried a man named Callaghan and moved to Stockton, the suburb on the northern side of the Hunter River at Newcastle.

Michael Hough, the son of the above two, was my grandfather. He died 30/6/1919 from the influenza pandemic which came back to Australia with the returning troops from World War 1. He left my grandmother with six children of whom the second last, Lillian, was my mother. She died in February 2002 aged 87.

Could I ask if you can take the family line back beyond Patrick and Margaret? Such are the research facilities available here in the past few years that I have not been able to go back beyond them. Within the next couple of years I hope to travel to Ireland to visit the place of my origins and when I do so I will make contact.

Every best wish,

Brian Roach.
I am looking for any info on a Nancy Hough, born to William and Leah Hough, in Ohio in 1825. I believe she married Campbell Haggerty (found in an 1850 census in Ohio), and I would like to verify this marriage as well as her birth to William. Thanks for any insights that might be provided.

Hi Jamie,

My line is John Hough, marr 1 Elizabeth uknown, marr 2 Nancy Hixon of Perry Co, OH. We have recently exchanged emails regarding the location of the Hough Cemetery in Perry Co, OH.

I agree with putting Ephram with the George Hough and Margaret Snyder family. George could possibly have a will, more probable to have an Estate file because he owned land according to the census. But, since Ephram died 15 years before George, and he was only 14, so he would not have had any children that would get his share of his father's estate, I don't think you will find his name mentioned in any of the papers. You might contact the Church. Maybe they have records regarding the burials in the cemetery.

Laura

Jamie -- sorry, I didn't mean I thought it was Casper's son. Just noting that someone else in the Jacob Hough family line named a son, Ephram.

Just quickly looked at the 1830 census and found two sons of Jacob and Louisa who had males list in the under 5 category: Jacob (Elizabeth) and George (Margaret). Following these two families through to 1840 and 1850 census, it appears that MAYBE the Ephram that died in 1842 might have been a son of George Hough and Margaret Snyder. They were married Feb 1828. Just more ideas to consider!

Laura

Hi Jamie,

I'm inclined to think that he was probably more likely a grandson of Jacob Hough and Louisa Augenstein. Jacob's family settled in that part of Ross Co, OH. Jacob, Louisa, and some of Jacob's descendents are buried in that same cemetery.

In 1860 census, Casper Hough (son of Jacob and Louisa) has a son named "Ephraim" born abt 1849. So, now we know the name appears in this line of Hough's.

I have not spent much time researching Jacob and Louisa's line, so this is just my opinion. Did you actually go to the cemetery? If so, who was buried around him. FindaGrave.com has photos posted for 5 Hough gravestones in Salem White Church Cemetery.

Laura

If you're referring to Perch Hough that was born in Fitzhenry, PA in 1886 then his parents are George Hough and Catherine Hammel/Hammill. Percy Hough is my husband's grandmother's father and those are the names she gave to me. Unfortunately that is far back as she knows, but if I learn anything new I will let you know.

Hi Peggy,

Percy Hough is my husband's grandmother's father (or his great-grandfather). Anyhow, my husband's grandmother told me that Percy Hough's father's name was George Hough and his mother was Catherine Hammel/Hammill (sp?). I don't know anything else beyond that, though, but if I learn anymore I'll let you know. My husband's grandmother told me she would look through some old papers and see what she has regarding her family history.

My great grandmother's death certificate list her mother's name as Sallie Huff (could be Hough). Her father was Blakney/Blakeny. I think she came from South Carolina. She was married to Reddick K. Moseley and she died in Thomas County, Georgia. Does anyone know anything about these families?

They are not on my tree, but you might have some more luck if you are able to give the city, state and or country they were born and died in? Also maiden vs married names. Just a hint :)
