Seeking information on the parents and/or siblings of Arabella H Hough. She was born in November 1844 in Connecticut, and married Isaac P Newell 18 Dec 1865, probably in Plainville, Hartford County, Conn. Their children, all born in Plainville, were Levi H Newell, Matilda J Newell, Adaline M Newell and Minnie Belle Newell. At the time that Isaac and Arabella married Plainville was still a part of Farmington. Adaline M Newell was born in 1876 and Oliver L Clark in between 1900 and 1907.

I am curious who Oliver L. Clark was. According to the book Descendents of William Hough of CT, Adaline and her sister, Matilda, both died on 3/18/1883. Is this not correct?

Arabella's parents were Levi Hough and Betsey Tuttle. Levi's ancestry is: Levi-David-Andrew-Ephraim-James-Samuel-William.

Check the 1900 census on Isaac P & Arabella Hough Newell
in Conn. It list them as having 4 children with 3 still living. I think it was only Matilda J. that died on 18 March 1883. Will make you think. Jim Hough

Sorry for not replying sooner, I haven't been checking the board and I didn't receive a notice that you had replied.

Oliver L Clark married Adeline Newell before or early in 1907. She was the daughter of Isaac P Newell and Arabella Hough. She did not die in 1883, I think this is a typo in the Lovelad Genealogy (I haven't seen the Hough book). She is in the 1900 census living as a boarder in New Britain, CT. Both she and her husband died in the late 1950's and are buried in Hillcrest Park Cemetery. I haven't had a chance to get out there yet to find out what their grave stones say.

Thank you for the lead on Levi Hough and Betsey Tuttle as parents for Arabella Hough. I'm not convinced that Levi and Betsey Hough's daughter Isabella is the wife of Isaac P. Newell. In the census records after their marriage she is named Bella, Isabella, Arabella and Aralla. Which one is right? There is an Arabella H Hough living as a boarder and working in a factory in the 1860 census. Isabella Hough, daughter of Levi and Betsey Hough is listed as living with her parents in the 1860 census - so there are two women born at roughly the same time who could be Isaac Newell's wife. Guess I need to dig up some primary source records.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Sandy

Sandy,

I believe Arabella H. Hough and Isabella Hough are the same person and daughter of Levi Hough and Betsy Tuttle.

In the 1860 census, when she is listed as living with her parents, the Index lists her name as Isabella, but the actual census lists her name as Arabella.

I just checked her listing in every census from 1850-1910. She is alternately listed as Isabella and Arabella. However, in the later censuses, her name is listed as Arabella H. Newell. I believe her name is Arabella H. Hough Newell. The name Isabella is either an error by the census takers or it could be a nickname/alternate name her family called her.

That is my take on the issue.

Becky

Hi Becky,

You have an interesting theory, and I think it may be right. It appears that Arabella Hough was counted twice, once with her family and once as a factory worker boarding in the Norton house.

There was another 15 year old female factory workingliving at the same place as Arabella named Louise Ingram. I did a search for her and found another 15 year old Louise Ingram listed with her family in Plainville.

I wonder if there was some effort on the part of the census taker to increase the popluation of Farmington, or if it was an innocent mistake as both Arabella and Louisa may have been back at the boarding house on the day the enumeration was taken but were at home on June 1 the date when people were to be counted.

I also looked at the record for Isabella Hough and agree that the name on the document is Arabella.

I also like Levi Hough as Arabella H Newell's father as she and Isaac Newell named their oldest son Levi Hough Newell.

Thanks for your help.

Sandy Mackay

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your posting, I hadn't thought about checking the census records for living child information. I had assumed that the Loveland Genealogy had an error, as I have found other errors in the book.

Possable reason for them being listed twice was probably census taken on two different days; One time at home & the other at place of work. I always check the date the record was taken. Lots of fun. James H. Hough.
