I have a Louis Horwitz in my family too. He was my paternal grandfather's brother. I have no idea when he was born, when he immigrated to the US or where he lived. My pgf was Bernard Louis Horwitz, parents were Moses Horwitz and Birdie Behrman (sp?). Birdie abandoned the family for another man and soon after Moses died, leaving the boys orphans. I don't know much about exactly where they came from, except that my pgf said it was "5 miles from the German border", close to or in Lithuania.

Abrahms/ Abramovics to Horwitz

I am looking for information on the original surname of my paternal great grandfather.
His name was Louis Horwitz (b. about 1885) and immigrated to the U.S. from Lithuania in 1900- 1904. He married Golde Eppel in Chicago and later moved to the Los Angeles area.
His cousin was Solomon Horwitz (the father of Moses, Jerome and Samuel Howard - two of The Three Stooges). And he had a brother names Jack.
It has been said, but I don't have concrete evidence, that their last name was some form of "abramovich" or "Abrams" and that they were living in or around Kaunas/ Kovno. It has also been said that he had five or six other sisters who stayed in Lithuania and perished in the Holocaust, with the exception of one, who went to Israel.
Louis Horwitz

Looking for genealogy information about my grandfather, Louis Horwitz, who may have emigrated from the Kiev area of Russia in the early 1900's. He worked as a watch repairer and jeweler and he lived in NY, Chicago and Philadelphia. He was married to Sarah "Sadie" Marmelstein. They had 2 sons, Harry (my father) and Joseph. Sarah died in Philadelphia in the flu epidemic of 1918 at the age of 25. I can find no information on her either. I was told she was from a section of Romania. I had also been told that she had a relative named Herman Marmelstein who lived in NJ at one time. Louis married again after Sarah died and had a 3rd son named Harold. Louis died in 1948 in Philadelphia at the age of approximately 71. I have been looking for information for either of my grandparents for years with no luck. Thanks.

Horwitz in ND

Nathan Horwitz immigrated to the U.S. in 1886, along with his wife Sarah and 2 babies, Louis/Lewis and Dora. It appears he went directly to Fargo, Cass Co. ND. He purchased a Land Patent in 1891 in adjoining Ramsey Co. and is mentioned on the monument honoring Jewish homesteaders there near Garske.

It appears Nathan left behind in the Ukraine (Russia) at least one child, Pincus (Pinney, Pinney Peter), who later immigrated to Fargo as an adult. Nathan and Sara were also the parents of Isadore Horwitz, who founded the Crescent Jewelry stores.

Nathan and Sara were the parents of: Pinney, Lewis, Dora, Harry, Isadore, and Minnie.

Sara died in Denver CO in 1907, where according to her obituary she had gone for health reasons. In 1910, Nathan is found on the Federal census for Detroit, Becker Co. MN - about 50 miles east of Fargo.

To date, I find no death or burial record for Nathan, either in MN or ND. While I find plenty of Horwitz's in MN, at this point I don't know if there is any relation - but there does not appear to be as their places of birth are different from Nathan's.

I do not know what Sara's maiden name is. There are conflicting records showing her birthplace as Germany and Russia.

If anyone has more information on this family, particularly Nathan, it would be much appreciated, and I will be happy to share what I have collected.

I am trying to locate the descendants of Henoch Hirsh Horwitz of what is now the city of Rezenkne, Latvia. I have researched his ancestors back several generations and I would like to connect him with the Horwitz-Horowitz Families in the region.

I invite all Horwitz-Horowitz-Gurevich family researchers to visit my Horwitz Family History site at http://horwitzfam.org

I also suggest that you check out the excellent site that Shlomo Gurevich maintains. He has his link posted on this Board. I have mirrored some of his information at my site.

11 of Henoch's children came to Chicago about 1905-1908 and they all married and had children.
Looking for any family

My great-grand parents came to Ellis Island from Russia. I did not have the pleasure of knowing them or their names. They had at least one son, my grandfather named Joseph Horwitz. I do not know if he was born here in Macon, Ga but that he did live here many years and died here. Joseph married Ida Mae Brake and had two children David and my father, Milton. They were members of Temple Beth Israel. David Horwitz married a lady named Garnell and they had one son named David "Dee" who died recently without any children. My father, Milton Horwitz married Naomi Hazel Buff and had three children. A son named Marvin Joel and two daughters, Denise Louise and Michelle Buff. Marvin can not have any children therefore there are no children to carry on the Horwitz name. My father states that we are related to many Horwitz in Atlanta but I have never met any of them. They should be Milton and David's first or second cousins. I would believe that Joseph Horwitz from Macon, GA would be their uncle or great uncle. If you have information, please e-mail me at michelle@goodrich.tc.

Rose had brothers Samuel and Louis. Louis changed his last name to Howard from Horwitz. Rose's parents were Morris and Betsie (Bessarabia?) ADELMAN Horwitz (this is the second wife of Morris. Morris’ first wife Elizabeth was hung when the Romanoff’s family were taken away in the Russian revolution as Morris was a emissary to the Czar. This is the story told to Louis’ son Raymond Louis Howard. Betsie’s parents were Israel and Charlottie Edelman from Russia and at least one sibling Isac Edelman who were all born in Russia. Samuel was the son of the first wife. Family history says that Sam was a Captain or Major in the Army of USA and Morris his father was a Russian Army officer. My father is the son of Louis Raymond (Horwitz) Howard and his name is Raymond Louis Howard. Louis Raymond Howard was a Commander of the American Legion Post in Hemmit, California. Louis was a pharmacist in Hemmit, CA and owned a drug store and fountain. Please respond to Tony Howard at toiyabe2@hotmail.com

Hello, my father-in-law is Larry Parnes son of Rose Horwitz and Jacob Parnes. He remembers the Raymond you speak of and a little of the history you replied with. I had offered to try and gather some information for Larry since he does not know that much of his heritage or roots. Larry would like to contact you since the info you replied with he is absolutely convinced that you are indeed related. Raymond was larry's cousin which the last time he seen him was in Hawaii quite a long time ago. Larry's email is larryparnes@msn.com
