I don't think I have any connection with this family - I was just hoping to help somebody by sending them a copy of the photo.

I looked on the CWGC website and found and posted the details shown on there which show the parents as:

Parents:

Son of Mr. and Mrs. John Horrocks, of 107, Old Rd., Heaton Norris, Stockport

This would be a John Horrocks a couple of generations on from your John and in a different area

Re: John Horrocks Mayor of Lancashire Wigan 1911-1912

However, this was a short lived phase in the history of the Frenchwood area. Manufacturing continued to grow, and instead of becoming a desirable suburb dotted with large houses, a more intensive kind of building and increasing pollution drove away the wealthy.

A central role in this transformation of the town as a whole, and Frenchwood in particular was played by two brothers, who became known as ‘The Cotton Kings of Preston’. They originated, however, from Edgworth near Bolton, and their working lives began in their father’s millstone quarry:

Samuel Horrocks (1766-1842) was the older brother, and eventually became a very successful cotton manufacturer. He was Mayor of Preston, 1801–1802.
John Horrocks (1768-1804) founded Horrockses and Co. and built most of the cotton spinning mills in Preston, including Frenchwood Mill.
During the 1780s, John had the stronger interest in the newly developing cotton spinning industry, which was only just getting going in Lancashire so it was easy to get involved. He first came to Preston sell his products to John Watson, who had opened the first cotton mill there.

The brothers disagreed and in 1791 John moved to Preston. During his lifetime he built six cotton spinning mills, including Frenchwood Mill. His own yarn and cloth was now sold directly all around the world and the firm remained associated with cotton production for another 150 years. He gave his elder brother Samuel a share in the business and taught him how to manage the mills, though he did not have as strong an interest in cotton manufacturing. He also became an MP for Preston because of the importance he had now achieved in the town.

In 1804, John died suddenly while in London and Samuel took over Horrockses, which continued to flourish despite the change of ownership. He also became MP for Preston in place of his brother. He held the seat for 22 years despite being remembered as 'the silent member for Preston' because he hardly ever spoke in the House of Commons. In 1801–1802 he was made Mayor of Preston, further proff of how successful the firm was.

After his death Thomas Miller bought the company and the business continued with a succession of owners during the following 125 years. They all kept the name ‘Horrockses’, the greatest name in cotton. Eventually due to competition from foreign producers, the mill closed down during the 1870s.

I believe we are related. This is John Horrocks 1786 and his brother Samuel Horrocks 1766 who was major of Preston. I hope this helps you out

Hi, My name is Barbara Horrocks Bekooy and I am just starting my research into my family history. My father was James William Horrocks and my mother was Mary Ernestine Holliday Strunk both of Lansing, West Virginia. Grandfather and Grandmother (my father's side) were James Horrocks and Sarah Gertrude Atkinson both of Lansing, WV. Grandparents on my Mother's side were Ernest Huddleston Holliday and Hester Ellen Gill both of Lookout WV. Believe that my ancestors from England were John Horrocks and Elizabeth Kenyon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Barbara

He emigrated to Canada. The next oldest, Thomas Ainscow Horrocks, owned a coal mine, according to his nephew, my grandfather Thomas Ainscow Horrocks. I have the names of Sarah Ainscow's parents, but no information beyond that.

Lloyd Horrocks

Hi Tina
In researching the life of Charles Colville Horrocks, a senior public servant in colonial Queensland, I have come across information on John Horrocks Whitehead (1810-1846) which I am happy to share with you. Charles Colville H. was a gr.grandson of the Preston/Lancashire cotton tycoon. He was born in Weimar, Germany where his branch of the Horrocks had moved to escape the bitterness and division which had consumed the family in England. One branch was becoming increasingly poorer while the other became ever more prosperous. Charles Colville's father was John Horrocks III. Two uncles of Charles Colville also settled in Weimar: (Captain) Charles Horrocks and James Horrocks. James Horrocks worked for about five years in Singapore with his cousin John Horrocks Whitehead, a partner in the trading firm of Shaw, Whitehead & Co. John Horrocks Whitehead died at Singapore in 1846 aged 36 years. the same age as his uncle the cotton tycoon had reached at the time of his death. He is mentioned in the Singapore newspaper regarding his involvement with the church, St Andrews I believe, just near the Raffles hotel, and I believe he is buried in the churchyard. I would have to locate my notes to confirm all the above details and perhaps to extract any more information. I hope this helps.

Hi
You are correct about the cemetary. It appears John Horrocks Whitehead is buried in the old cemetery at Fort Canning in Singapore. A tombstone was reportedly erected for him by his good friend and business partner, the wealthy philonthropist Tan Tock Seng (1798-1850)upon which he inscribed "as a token of affection on the part of a Chinese friend, Tan Tock Seng". All the references I have encountered however indicate JHW was 36 years of age upon his death in 1846. See Buckley: An Anecdotal History of Singapore - Uni. of Malaya Press 1965; and One Hundred Years' History of the Chinese in Singapore - available as an e-book on the National Library of Singapore website. JHW was never my main topic of research so my notes are not the best as concerns him, but it does seem 36 was his age at his death. He definitely died in 1846. I think there was a notice in The Gentleman's Magazine to that effect, so that means he was born in 1810. If he was 38 at death it would place his birth at 1808. I have no information on that point. I'd be interested in any other information on JHW's Singapore activities.

Hello

My Albert Horrocks is proving to be quite a difficult - in fact the most difficult individual in my tree - find as my father has only very limited information. I know he was from somewhere in the chapel area and I know my dad as a child would visit his dad's Aunt Lily so there could well be a link.
My strongest piece of info is that Albert was married to Martha Ann Bennett daughter of Jasper Bennett

Hi June
thank you for your previous reply. I have read through the whole thread to try and work out the generations and how they related to each other but this got more and more confusing!

I think the james that you refer to as being born in 1807 may be the James that we are investigating as to whether or not he is an ancestor.

I am struggling to unpick the henry's and james and samuels in the emails in this thread. have you got any of this as a family tree which might make it easier to see if dates coincide? It may be that we are related!!

I think my James's father may have been Joseph who was part of a cotton firm Horrocks and Jacson and co in Preston. Joseph's father was possibly a timber dealer in Bradshaw. Does any of this interlink with any of your family tree bits. I would be really keen to receive any info about the james born in 1807. If it is the same one,I think he died in 1852 leaving a young family. My home email is adrienne.vmc@btinternet.com if that is easier.

thanks
Adrienne

Hi
I would be interested in your info about the cousin henry to see if any way this ties up with our alleged family connections with the Horrocks family. My gg grandmother was a hester elizabeth horrocks, I think of a quaker family. It is possible her father was James. Was he connected to henry in anyway? Hester's great grandparents may have come from Bradshaw. any chance that this interconnects with any of your horrocks research?

Hester married a John Forshaw who ended up as mayor of preston. I have to say this Forshaw family like to make themselves sound more imposing than they were so any connection may be wishful thinking on their victorian need for good standing!!!

be good to hear any details you have.
Thanks
Adrienne

I know it has been quite some time since you posted this, but I hope you can still receive notifications. I have an Alice Horrocks, born 1825 in Lancashire England. Her boys, all three of them moved to Canada in 1869 -72? trying to pin point that still. They, however, changed their last name to Jones, no notion why. I have found several of their records displaying Horrocks Jones or H Jones. Could she have come with them? I don't know, but it is a good mystery. How did you come by this book?

Hi, Henry also had a son James, born 1807 but i have no details of his future life. His father too was a James, but this is way too early, andmy ggrandfather had a son, James born 1890, but by that time they were Methodists and I only know the name of one son, Earnest, who lived in Bolton..
Since your family have connections with Preston it may be that one of them went to work for the Cotton Kings (henry stayed in Bradshaw to manage the family stone quarry for them,in Turton bottoms).I beleve at this point at least some of the family were Quakers, certainly the branch who farmed the Birches.
Hester is often a Quaker name. Good luck

Im looking for any information on Samuel Horrocks. I believe he was born around 1882 and he was Cheif Inspector at the Wigan Police Station. And his brother was Chief Detective Inspector. Samuel married Alice Anne Middleton and they had 7 children. One of the sons was Herbert, born 12 January 1920. Im not sure if any of the other children were named John, but I believe it could be as it is a family name that was carried down.
Any information will be greatly appreciated!
I am looking for any information on the Horrocks family, founders of the cotton mills. I have managed to trace back to my great grandfather, Samuel Horrocks, but no further. Any information will really be appreciated.

Hi Geoff,

I am searching for any information on the Horrocks family of the cotton mills. I believe that we are related to them, but have had no luck tracing any further than my great grandfather. Samuel Horrocks was born in Lancashire in 1882, and was chief inspector at the Wigan Police Station. He married Alice Anne Middleton, and they had 7 children. Samuel retired in 1948 and died in 1959 aged 77. Sadly I only know the names of 2 of their children.
A copy of the family tree, or any other information you may have will be greatly appreciated.
