1. WILLIAM1 HOPKINS was born Abt. 1575 in Yeovilton, England, and died 1670 in Illchester, England. He married JOANNA ARNOLD October 13, 1611 in Illchester, England, daughter of NICHOLAS ARNOLD and ALICE GULLY. She was born November 30, 1577 in Nottingham, England, and died March 10, 1620/21 in Ilchester, England.

He married ELIZABETH ARNOLD 1645 in Rhode Island, daughter of WILLIAM ARNOLD and CHRISTIAN PEAKE. She was born November 23, 1621 in Nottingham, England, and died Bef. 1676 in Rhode Island.

Notes for ELIZABETH ARNOLD: [this may or may not be correct - Elizabeth is also shown as being married to William Carpenter in her father's will. It is agreed that he married someone referred to as “cousin Elizabeth” but not agreed that is was Elizabeth Arnold] Sister to Benedict Arnold (not the traitor). First Governor of Rhode Island

Notes for STEPHEN HOPKINS:
Representing Rhode Island at the Continental Congress
Education: (Lawyer, Educator)
Work: Speaker of the Rhode Island Assembly, (circa 1750-2); Delegate to the Albany Convention, 1754; Member of the Continental Congress, 1774-78; Member of Rhode Island Legislature.
Born in Scituate (then a part of Providence), Rhode Island. He was apparently self-educated. He was a member and speaker of the Rhode Island Assembly, and in 1754 was a delegate to the Albany convention in New York were he considered Franklin's early plan of Union. Hopkins spoke out against British tyranny long before the revolutionary period. He attended the first Continental Congress in 1774, and was a party to the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He left that congress in 1778 and returned to his native state to serve in its Legislature. He died at the age of seventy eight.
