I am looking for information on Haiku/Hookano. My great-grandfather James Louis Haiku's mother was Kelupaina, who may have been related to Hookano. My great-grandmother was Emma Lahela Silva, born Dec. 1893. She married James Louis Haiku, born March 1888. They had three children, Anthony Haiku, Julia Haiku, my grandmother, and Thomas Haiku Fern. She then married Joseph Kawaha around 1920. They had Beatrice, Joseph Kawaha Jr. and Madeline. Around 1923 she married Lui Hookano. Lui Hookano shot and killed Emma Lahela in March of 1924 while she was holding their baby, Amy. My grandmother was 10 years old at the time and witnessed the murder. The "Nupepa Kuakoa", online, has an article about the shooting, in Hawaiian at: http://nupepa.org/cgi-bin/nupepa?e=q-0nupepa--00-0-0--010---...
It is dated October 9, 1924 Volume 63 No. 41, page 5
I can't read Hawaiian, but if anyone can interpret this, please let me know. Any information about relation to Haiku is appreciated! Aloha, Connie
