My fathers cousin was Arthur Hoodless the undertaker from Barton upon Humber North Lincolnshire. He was still alive when we left to come to Australia in 1956. His brother was Percy and then there was another in the Portsmouth I believe. There also was another brother John who lived in Louth and has a son still surviving.
We are descended from John's brother, son of James and Susanna Bowers. James Andrew Raithby Hoodless and family sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne on the "Empress of the Seas". A native of Lincolnshire, he left Somercotes with his wife Helen son Joseph (2) and daughter Elizabeth (3 months) on the application of Capt. Horton to work on his property, Somercotes, Ross, Tasmania in 1861.
Helen and Elizabeth died during the voyage out.
After arriving in Melbourne, James and Joseph transferred to the "Havilah" in Melbourne and arrived in Launceston on 21st August 1861.
A family anecdote described the forlorn young Englishman dismounting from the coach at 'Somercotes' gate, walking forlornly down the drive, bag in hand and small son on his shoulder.

James later remarried twice. His son by his second marriage, James Condra was my husband's g. grandfather. James Condra's sister was named Margaret Rose after her aunt in England.

I have found an Arthur Hoodless from Barton on Humber. He was an undertaker in Barton and would have been about 100 years old if he was still alive. I don't think he had any children though. He did have a brother, Percy, who had a daughter. I don't know the daughter's name, but she married a furniture shop owner in Barton by the name of Norman Cox.

Did you get any information or the coat of arms from Aleta, I have not been able to get a response from her?

I went to school in Barton on Humber in England, and there were 2 other Hoodless's at this school as well as my brother and myself. The others were Andrew and Susan. My mother thinks that they may be grandchildren of an Arthur Hoodless, who my grandfather used to be a bell ringer with. I would be interested in any information you get regarding Hoodless's in Lincolnshire and the Coat of Arms.

It is possible that I might be back in England in November too - currently living in Ireland

I can trace his father (William I think) and grandfather (Malalec - I think) through speaking to my mother which I will do later today. I would be very interested in any history on the Hoodless family, especially if we are in any way related. I have 1 brother, Paul who has 2 daughters, and I have 4 sons myself.

I don't know where this lies in the grand scheme of the Hoodless family which I imagined to be considerably smaller than it appears to be. I'm the Grandson of Arthur Hoodless (1913-1985) who had brothers, Joe and John, and sisters, Kath and Edna, all from Lincolnshire. If anyone knows of any connection to themselves and this part of the family I'd be pleased to hear from you. Also I'm intrigued as to the Hoodless coat of arms.
